Position Overview

The Platform as a Service (PaaS) Messaging Team at GEICO is in search of a seasoned Lead Systems Architect who is enthusiastic about developing robust, scalable distributed systems.

In this pivotal role, you will contribute to the PaaS initiative at GEICO, focusing on the creation of a high-efficiency, low-maintenance, and zero-downtime streaming infrastructure that is essential for evolving GEICO's insurance operations into a technology-driven enterprise committed to engineering excellence.

Role Responsibilities

As a Lead Systems Architect, you will work in tandem with senior engineers to foster innovation, construct scalable systems, improve existing solutions, and address significant business challenges.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing leadership across various domains, offering both technical and strategic insights to the organization.
  • Influencing and educating engineering leadership, stakeholders, and teams on critical technical issues.
  • Collaborating with product managers, team members, customers, and other engineering divisions to resolve complex challenges.
  • Designing, implementing, and deploying technical strategies and scalable software within the Platform Engineering sector.
  • Ensuring accountability for the quality, usability, and performance of our solutions.
  • Acting as a mentor and role model, fostering technical expertise within our engineering and product teams.
  • Establishing operational processes, measuring outcomes for desired results, demonstrating adaptability, and promoting continuous learning.
  • Participating in on-call duties and operational support as necessary.
Required Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Extensive practical experience in designing intricate systems, data pipelines, and architectures with a focus on scalability and performance optimization, particularly in Messaging and event streaming solutions.
  • Proficiency in at least one object-oriented programming language such as Java, Go, or Python.
  • A deep understanding of at least one open-source event streaming solution, including Apache Kafka, Apache Pulsar, or RabbitMQ.
  • A proven ability to design experiments, influence engineering direction, and shape product roadmaps.
  • A successful track record of collaborating with engineering teams to transition research into production.
  • Experience applying quantitative methods to resolve analytical challenges.
  • Adeptness in thriving within a dynamic, startup-like environment.
  • Familiarity with Schema Registry and safe schema evolution is advantageous.
  • Knowledge of big data and streaming data architectures, data warehousing solutions, Hadoop, and ETL pipelines is a plus.
Experience

The candidate should possess:

  • 8+ years of experience, with at least 6 years focused on Scalable System Design, Architecture, and related fields.
  • 4+ years of professional experience in Platform as a Service.
  • 4+ years of experience with open-source frameworks and distributed systems.
Education

A Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field, or equivalent education or work experience is required.
