Overview
Under guidance, performs biological assessments, habitat evaluations, and water quality monitoring to fulfill regulatory requirements and assess aquatic resources in urban waterways influenced by district operations.Key Responsibilities
The following responsibilities are fundamental and common to roles within this classification. They are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all job duties for any one position in the class. Oversees, organizes, and evaluates the work of subordinate staff. Recommends actions related to hiring, transfers, disciplinary measures, promotions, and separations. Manages the collection of fish and benthic invertebrates from waterways in the metropolitan area. Directs the collection of water and sediment samples in aquatic environments, including the operation of in situ water quality monitoring devices. Supervises laboratory analysis of biological samples obtained in the field, including the identification of benthic invertebrates and fish, as well as weighing, measuring, and examining fish for signs of disease. Oversees laboratory analysis of water samples for chlorophyll content. Processes or supervises the processing of field and laboratory data, generating comprehensive reports. Participates in and supervises applied environmental monitoring initiatives. Composes reports summarizing and interpreting findings from biological and chemical water quality evaluations. Trains and instructs laboratory or field personnel in approved field collection techniques, laboratory processing of biological specimens, and data analysis methodologies. Reviews and provides feedback on local water quality-related regulatory documents concerning potential impacts on the district. Offers technical assistance to other departments regarding water quality matters.Additional Responsibilities
Oversees data entry, verification, summarization, and statistical analysis of biological and chemical monitoring data. Ensures rigorous maintenance of field collection and laboratory analytical equipment. Initiates purchase orders and work requests as needed. Performs other duties as assigned.Working Conditions
May involve exposure to various chemical and biological materials, some of which may be hazardous or toxic. Involves outdoor work and potential exposure to extreme weather conditions. Fieldwork may include boating and wading in streams while using appropriate protective equipment.Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Extensive knowledge of the principles, practices, and procedures of aquatic biology and ecology. Strong understanding of approved methods for collecting water and sediment samples, including the use of small boats and related equipment. Proficient in biostatistics. Familiarity with IEPA water quality standards. Competence in using personal computers, including spreadsheet and database software. Ability to plan and oversee the work of subordinate staff. Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from a four-year accredited college or university majoring in biology or a related biological science, along with two years of experience in aquatic biology or a closely related field.Substitution
Graduate studies in biological sciences may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.Promotional Requirements
Possession of a bachelor's degree in biology or a related biological science. One year of service with the district as an Assistant Aquatic Biologist, Senior Laboratory Technician, or Senior Environmental Research Technician. Civil service status in one of the aforementioned classifications.
