Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Environmental Scientist to join our team at the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago. As a key member of our research and monitoring team, you will be responsible for conducting complex research assignments, managing programs and projects, and overseeing environmental monitoring activities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct research on new technologies related to wastewater treatment, biosolids management, and water quality improvements.
  • Manage programs and projects as a team leader, supervising technical staff and developing work plans.
  • Oversee environmental monitoring activities, including biosolids, aquatic ecology, surface water and groundwater quality, and wastewater microbiology.
  • Prepare reports and technical manuscripts for publication, and develop comprehensive technical reports.
  • Review and prepare comments on technical documents from other departments or regulatory agencies.
  • Assist in solving plant problems, such as sludge dewatering, odor issues, and plant upsets.
  • Review plans and specifications, and collaborate with other departments to solve problems related to water reclamation plants.
  • Assign, supervise, and review work, ensuring staff compliance with District policies and procedures.
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need a master's degree in a relevant field, such as water resources sciences, environmental engineering, or microbiology. You will also need at least 10 years of experience in the fields of wastewater treatment, biosolids management, analytical microbiology, or water quality monitoring, including one year at a supervisory level.

Related graduate study above the master's degree may be substituted for the required non-supervisory experience on a year-for-year basis.

Civil service status in one of the foregoing classes is also required.
