Role Summary:
The Culinary Assistant to the Sous Chef plays a vital role in supporting the head chef and sous chef while collaborating with volunteers to prepare and serve meals for a group of up to 40 individuals. This position also emphasizes maintaining a clean and organized kitchen environment, ensuring meal quality, and adhering to safety and sanitation standards.
- Assist in the preparation and serving of meals for up to 40 guests.
- Cook and present high-quality dishes, focusing on both flavor and aesthetics.
- Support the efficient operation of the kitchen, ensuring optimal performance.
- Oversee and guide volunteers in food preparation, cleaning, and serving tasks.
- Maintain cleanliness in the kitchen, dining area, and dishware.
- Ensure compliance with sanitation and safety protocols among volunteers.
- Address any issues that may arise during food preparation and service.
- Foster a positive, professional, and welcoming atmosphere for staff, volunteers, and participants.
- Manage incoming deliveries, including proper storage, inventory updates, and communication with the chef regarding low stock items.
- Maintain open lines of communication with kitchen staff.
- Assist in food preparation for special events as required.
- Understand and manage dietary restrictions, allergens, and cross-contamination prevention.
- Familiarity with various cooking equipment.
- Knowledge of diverse cooking methods, recipes, and procedures.
- CPR and Bloodborne Pathogen training for emergency situations.
- Understanding of best practices in meal preparation, cooking, and serving.
- Proficiency in computer systems for ordering and inventory management.
- A degree in Culinary Arts or related field is advantageous.
- Experience in a fast-paced commercial kitchen environment.
- Commitment to serving military veterans and their families.
- SERV-Safe Certification or willingness to obtain certification.
- Regularly required to reach and lift.
- Frequently required to stand and engage in physical activity.
- Occasionally required to sit, stoop, kneel, or crouch.
- Frequently lift and/or move items weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Regular exposure to moving mechanical parts.
- Occasional exposure to fumes and airborne particles.
- The work environment is typically loud.
