Role Summary:
The Culinary Assistant to the Sous Chef plays a vital role in supporting the head chef and sous chef while collaborating with volunteers to prepare and serve meals for a group of up to 40 individuals. This position also emphasizes maintaining a clean and organized kitchen environment, ensuring meal quality, and adhering to safety and sanitation standards.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist in the preparation and serving of meals for up to 40 guests.
  • Cook and present high-quality dishes, focusing on both flavor and aesthetics.
  • Support the efficient operation of the kitchen, ensuring optimal performance.
  • Oversee and guide volunteers in food preparation, cleaning, and serving tasks.
  • Maintain cleanliness in the kitchen, dining area, and dishware.
  • Ensure compliance with sanitation and safety protocols among volunteers.
  • Address any issues that may arise during food preparation and service.
  • Foster a positive, professional, and welcoming atmosphere for staff, volunteers, and participants.
  • Manage incoming deliveries, including proper storage, inventory updates, and communication with the chef regarding low stock items.
  • Maintain open lines of communication with kitchen staff.
  • Assist in food preparation for special events as required.
  • Understand and manage dietary restrictions, allergens, and cross-contamination prevention.
Qualifications:
  • Familiarity with various cooking equipment.
  • Knowledge of diverse cooking methods, recipes, and procedures.
  • CPR and Bloodborne Pathogen training for emergency situations.
  • Understanding of best practices in meal preparation, cooking, and serving.
  • Proficiency in computer systems for ordering and inventory management.
  • A degree in Culinary Arts or related field is advantageous.
  • Experience in a fast-paced commercial kitchen environment.
  • Commitment to serving military veterans and their families.
  • SERV-Safe Certification or willingness to obtain certification.
Physical Requirements:
  • Regularly required to reach and lift.
  • Frequently required to stand and engage in physical activity.
  • Occasionally required to sit, stoop, kneel, or crouch.
  • Frequently lift and/or move items weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Regular exposure to moving mechanical parts.
  • Occasional exposure to fumes and airborne particles.
  • The work environment is typically loud.
