Job Summary

Under limited supervision, the Fire Operations Engineer is responsible for driving and operating firefighting apparatus; executing fire suppression and prevention tasks to safeguard lives and property; providing emergency rescue and basic medical assistance as necessary; utilizing various tools and power equipment during rescue missions; and maintaining the department's equipment, vehicles, and facilities. THIS IS A SAFETY-SENSITIVE POSITION

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Operates emergency vehicles, including pumpers and ladder trucks.
  • Conducts daily inspections of assigned apparatus to ensure proper functionality.
  • Performs minor maintenance on firefighting equipment.
  • Responds to alarms with the designated team, engaging in all activities related to extinguishing fires and providing medical care at emergency sites.
  • Administers medical assistance in accordance with certification level, departmental protocols, and state regulations.
  • Participates in fire safety inspections and public education initiatives as assigned, maintaining accurate records.
  • Attends training sessions covering firefighting techniques, emergency medical care, and the proper use of all related equipment.
  • Engages in various maintenance tasks for station facilities.
  • Ensures the operational readiness of apparatus and equipment.
  • Assumes the responsibilities of Fire Lieutenant as directed by supervisory personnel.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience in the role of engineer/driver within a full-time fire department.
  • Must possess the Tennessee Fire Commission Fire Apparatus Operator or Pumper and Aerial Operator certification or equivalent certification.
  • Must hold a valid Tennessee Department of Health Advanced Emergency Medical Technician license or be eligible for reciprocity.
  • Must have a valid Tennessee Driver's License or be able to obtain one within a reasonable timeframe.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Current Basic Extrication Certification.
  • Understanding of modern firefighting principles, practices, and procedures.
  • Familiarity with Fire Department Standard Operating Guidelines (SOGs) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Knowledge of fire hydraulics, apparatus, equipment, tools, and their proper maintenance.
  • Proficiency in emergency medical procedures, including advanced first aid and CPR.
  • Awareness of local geography and street layouts.
  • Ability to operate various emergency vehicles.
  • Competence in modern firefighting techniques.
  • Skill in operating and maintaining fire department tools and equipment.
  • Proficiency in using voice radio equipment.
  • Capability to assess emergencies and implement effective responses.
  • Ability to manage interactions with individuals under stress.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Must meet reasonable fitness and physical standards to perform job duties safely; possess sufficient vision and hearing acuity, whether normal or corrected, to operate tools and equipment; ability to lift and carry individuals and objects weighing up to 75 pounds, with potential for heavier loads; dexterity and fitness to perform physical tasks such as grasping, crawling, crouching, bending, stooping, climbing, stretching, walking, and running.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Fire Station and Field Operations: The Fire Operations Engineer primarily works from a fire station but spends considerable time in the field during emergency responses. This role requires readiness to respond to emergency calls, operate and maintain firefighting apparatus, and ensure all equipment is in optimal condition for immediate deployment.

Technical and Mechanical Expertise: As a specialist in fire service apparatus and equipment, the Engineer must possess strong technical and mechanical skills to perform regular maintenance, troubleshoot issues, and conduct repairs as necessary. This includes a comprehensive understanding of the mechanical functions of fire engines, ladders, pumps, and other related equipment.

Emergency Response Participation: During emergency incidents, the Engineer is responsible for safely driving fire apparatus to the scene, operating pumps and other firefighting equipment, and participating in firefighting and rescue operations. This requires a high level of proficiency, situational awareness, and adherence to safety protocols.

Team Collaboration and Communication: Close collaboration with firefighting teams and command staff is essential. The Engineer must communicate effectively to ensure seamless equipment operation during emergencies and participate in pre-incident planning and post-incident evaluations to enhance operational efficiency.

Physical Demands and Safety: The role is physically demanding, involving lifting, climbing, and working in challenging and potentially hazardous environments. The Engineer must maintain physical fitness and adhere to strict safety standards to mitigate risks associated with emergency response and equipment operation.

Training and Continuous Learning: Ongoing training in equipment operation, emergency response tactics, and safety protocols is a key aspect of the Engineer's work environment. The Engineer participates in regular drills and training sessions to stay current with the latest firefighting techniques and technological advancements in fire service equipment.

Flexible Schedule: This position requires shift work to ensure 24/7 coverage and readiness for emergency responses, including nights, weekends, and holidays, with the expectation of responding to emergency calls at any time during shifts.
