Job Summary

As a Patient Care Associate (PCA) on our Spinal Cord Unit, you will play a vital role in providing exceptional patient care and support to our patients with spinal cord injuries. Under the direction of a registered nurse, you will assist with clinical support functions to promote a safe and compassionate patient care environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Implement patient care plans as directed by the registered nurse.
  • Provide patient physical care, including bed baths, toileting, grooming, and changing bed linen, according to established guidelines.
  • Assist with patient monitoring activities, such as vital signs and blood glucose, as per established guidelines.
  • Prepare patients for meals and assist with feeding as needed.
  • Perform regular patient rounds and respond promptly to call lights to meet patients' needs.
  • Document patient care in a timely manner, adhering to established standards.
  • Organize patient rooms to maintain a clean and safe environment.
  • Collect and label specimens according to established procedures.
  • Provide mentoring and teaching to new nursing assistants to meet performance expectations.
Qualifications and Experience

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent, or a nursing assistant certification.
  • Recent experience and/or training in clinical patient care.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
  • Basic math and computer skills, with the ability to perform physical therapy skills with relevance to thoroughness and sequencing.
Physical Requirements

This role requires:

  • Standing, walking, and sitting for extended periods.
  • Use of hands requiring fine motor skills and sense of touch.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and push/pull objects up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions.
Work Environment

This role is based in a hospital setting, with exposure to:

  • High levels of noise and activity.
  • Exposure to blood-borne pathogens and other infectious agents.
  • Use of safety equipment, including gloves and face shields.

Please note that this is a night shift role, requiring flexibility and adaptability to work a variety of schedules.
