Job Description

The Salvation Army USA Central Territory is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Counselor to join our team at Wonderland Camp and Conference Center. As a Counselor, you will play a vital role in the lives of our campers, providing guidance, support, and mentorship to help them grow and develop in a safe and nurturing environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and lead a group of campers in daily activities, including devotions, instruction, and recreational activities.
  • Develop and implement programs that promote social, physical, intellectual, vocational, emotional, and spiritual growth in campers.
  • Provide guidance and support to campers in areas such as cabin cleanliness, personal hygiene, and table manners.
  • Participate in physical development and recreational activities, including aquatic-related activities and arts and crafts.
  • Assist with overnight campouts and other pioneering activities.
  • Complete maintenance requests and return to the Program Manager.
  • Help protect the personal belongings of each camper from damage/theft.
  • Chaperone campers on out-of-camp trips, ensuring their safety and well-being.
  • Complete American Camping Association/Title XX camper evaluations and Wonderland Camp camper evaluations.
  • Work closely with the resident nurse to ensure the health and well-being of campers.
  • Attend health orientation during general staff training and care for minor camper injuries as designated by the resident nurse.
  • Participate in camper classes and assist when needed.
  • Assist Unit Leader as assigned.
  • Support and be involved with camper chapels, staff devotions, and staff meetings.
  • Maintain a servant attitude and function as part of a team.
  • Assist with supervision and training during assigned Divisional encampments (Music & Badge camps).

Requirements:

  • Minimum 1 year of college or equivalent preferred.
  • Experience working with children, particularly in a camp or youth development setting.
  • Experience working with minority, low-income, and at-risk groups.
  • Minimum age of 18 preferred.
  • Current ARC CPR for the Professional Rescuer, and Standard First Aid.
  • Able to live on camp grounds throughout duration of employment.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to use initiative and be a self-starter.
  • An attention to detail.
  • A positive attitude and the ability to be flexible in light of changing job situations/priorities.
  • In agreement with the philosophy, goals, and objectives of The Salvation Army Wonderland Camp and Conference Center.
  • A willingness to support and uphold the mission of The Salvation Army and a passion for working with youth.

Working Environment:

  • This position requires light to heavy physical work.
  • The work environment includes an office and outdoor environment with a low to high noise level.
