Position Overview:


Under the supervision of a physician, the
Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) is responsible for delivering comprehensive respiratory care services as an integral member of the healthcare team.

Administers a wide range of routine and advanced respiratory procedures to patients across various departments within the healthcare facility, including Pediatric, Emergency/Trauma, Step-Down Critical Care, and Adult Critical Care Units, as well as specialized units following established protocols.

Provides urgent and critical care, ensuring airway management and stabilization, non-invasive ventilation, and oversees the operation of acute care ventilators for both short and long-term use.

Upholds the mission, vision, and values of Mercyhealth, adhering to organizational policies and procedures while performing additional duties as required.

Key Responsibilities:
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Conducts the responsibilities outlined in the Registered Respiratory Therapist Level 1 job description.

Initiates, monitors, evaluates, and weans both invasive and non-invasive ventilation. Makes clinical recommendations based on assessments, technical evaluations, patient compliance, laboratory results, and overall patient condition.


Implements and continuously assesses treatment plans, including medication delivery and oxygen therapy, through therapist-driven protocols by conducting patient evaluations to identify needs related to prescribed therapies, frequency, and duration.


Evaluates patients clinically before and after the administration of any medication, procedure, or device; recommends suitable therapies, including initial treatments, modifications, and discontinuations.

Educates and documents patient and family understanding of therapies, medications, and treatment goals throughout the process.


For PFT/Bronchoscopy specialties, additional expertise in the setup, calibration, and troubleshooting of pulmonary function testing and bronchoscopy equipment is required, along with the ability to perform all diagnostic and therapeutic procedures as directed by physicians, including but not limited to PF screens, Basic PFTs, pre/post bronchodilator testing, lung diffusion, metabolic testing, cardiopulmonary stress testing, ABG draws, NIF, MVV, methacholine challenges, and CO2 measurements.


Responds to emergency situations involving both adult and pediatric patients within the facility, assisting with resuscitation efforts by providing chest compressions, airway management, and ventilatory support in accordance with established guidelines.

Transports critically ill patients on mechanical ventilators and non-invasive ventilation devices to various procedures and testing locations.

Delivers age-appropriate care to support diverse patient populations during their hospital stay.

Demonstrates proficiency in caring for both pediatric and adult patients (when applicable), addressing each patient's unique physical, psychosocial, and cultural needs.

Assists in the orientation of new staff and employees transitioning to adult specialty care units.


Acts as the lead therapist in the absence of the Lead Respiratory Therapist on a rotational basis, fulfilling the responsibilities outlined in that role to the best of their ability.

Performs additional duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

Graduate of an accredited Respiratory Care Program

Minimum of 1 year of respiratory experience required, with at least 6 months in critical care settings.

Certification and Licensure:

RRT
If not eligible for
RRT, CRT required

CPR
ACLS certification within 6 months of hire

NRP certification within 90 days of orientation for departments requiring delivery attendance

WI Respiratory Care Practitioner license
