Function

The primary objective of this role is to safeguard and serve the community by enforcing state regulations and local laws pertaining to the management, care, and protection of both domestic and wild animals. This position operates under the general oversight of the Animal Control Manager, adhering to established protocols.

Minimum Qualifications
  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • A minimum of one year of full-time equivalent experience involving regular public interaction and some understanding of the appropriate care and handling of wild and domestic animals is necessary.
  • Previous experience in animal handling as a veterinary assistant, kennel attendant, or animal control officer is preferred.
  • Completion of specialized training equivalent to one year of college, focusing on wildlife management, biology, animal husbandry, or a related field is preferred.
  • Successful completion of state-mandated basic training for Animal Control Officer within 180 days of employment is required.
  • A full criminal background check, including an FBI fingerprint check, a review of the National Sex Offender Registry, a polygraph examination, and psychological testing must be passed.
  • This position is safety-sensitive and is subject to testing for alcohol and controlled substances in accordance with the city's substance abuse policy.
  • A valid driver's license and a satisfactory driving record based on the city's criteria are mandatory.
Additional Requirements
  • This role requires significant public interaction and travel within the city.
  • Shift work, including nights, weekends, holidays, and on-call emergency standby on a rotating basis, is necessary.
  • The incumbent must be able to provide credible testimony in court and other situations where credibility is crucial. A sustained finding of untruthfulness may lead to immediate termination.
  • The individual will be considered "essential personnel" during city emergencies or at the direction of the city manager, which may involve extended hours and unusual schedules.
