Role Summary:

The Patcher Subject Matter Expert (SME) position focuses on enhancing our Patcher product. With Patcher, we empower our clients to effortlessly maintain their infrastructure as code.

This is a contractor role compensated on an hourly basis. We anticipate an average workload of approximately 10-15 hours per week, with a maximum of 20 hours depending on your availability and expertise. One of the advantages of contracting is the flexibility in scheduling.

While this position begins as a contractor role, it offers a pathway to full-time employment with Gruntwork as future opportunities arise, should that be of interest.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Development in GoLang for Patcher.
    • Patcher is designed to assist enterprise platform teams in keeping their infrastructure updated with minimal effort. It features a core patching engine, a user-friendly interface for authoring patches for breaking changes, and GitHub integration for generating and deploying patches to platform teams.
    • Your contributions will include developing new functionalities, enhancing existing features, resolving bugs, and suggesting improvements for Patcher's performance. Ideally, you will utilize Patcher to manage your own infrastructure as code, providing valuable insights for its enhancement.
  • Exceptional Customer Support
    • Your responsibilities will include participating in business-hours support within your area of expertise to:
      • Assist in resolving customer inquiries and knowledge base articles
      • Keep GitHub issues and external pull requests updated
      • Collaborate with our internal team to ensure Patcher is effectively utilized and patches are created for internal modules
      • Help maintain an organized GitHub Project backlog
      • Automate and document solutions to prevent future issues for users
  • Open Source Contributions
    • Engage with our open-source initiatives, including Terragrunt, Terratest, cloud-nuke, bash-commons, boilerplate, and more.

Qualifications:

  • A robust background in software engineering with over 5 years of experience.
  • Extensive experience in GoLang and TypeScript.
  • Familiarity with the challenges of managing Terraform, OpenTofu, and other Infrastructure as Code (IaC) solutions at scale.
  • A proactive approach to addressing the complexities of upgrading critical components, such as AWS providers, and a commitment to developing excellent tools to ease these processes for others.
  • Strong English communication skills, comfortable interacting with external clients.
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule averaging 10-20 hours per week, available for approximately 48 weeks each year.
  • Ability to respond to support and maintenance requests within a 1-2 business day service level agreement.
  • A preference for automation over repetitive tasks, seeking to eliminate problems rather than redoing work.
  • Proficiency in writing Golang, TypeScript, and Bash is advantageous.
