Location: U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Ohio Ecological Services Field Office

Project Overview:

The Ohio Ecological Services Field Office is seeking two interns through the Hispanic Access Foundation to engage in various initiatives focused on conservation and community outreach. Interns will assist in projects that may affect threatened and endangered species while gaining hands-on experience in field techniques, public engagement, and data management for conservation efforts.

Key Responsibilities:

The intern will contribute to the following primary tasks:
  • Support diverse investigations by designing, collecting, and analyzing biological data to evaluate the success of conservation strategies for threatened species and pollinators.
  • Establish and manage biological databases; create spreadsheets or relational databases for effective data collection and analysis.
  • Develop and implement environmental education programs in local parks and educational institutions, with opportunities for outreach at designated wildlife refuges.
  • Engage with the community at events, providing educational resources and materials.
Interns will collaborate closely with a Hispanic Access Program Associate throughout their tenure. Participation in scheduled conference calls, webinars, and meetings is expected. Interns will document their experiences through photos and videos and will submit several blog posts reflecting on their development.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Strong interest or knowledge in biological fieldwork, botany, and pollinator ecology.
  • Experience or interest in outreach and the creation of environmental education resources.
  • Ability to interact effectively with diverse age groups; prior experience with public engagement is advantageous.
  • Capacity to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Familiarity or keen interest in database management and data analysis.
Minimum Requirements:
  • Ages 18 to 30; up to 35 for veterans.
  • Completion of two years of college coursework in biology, ecology, or environmental studies.
  • U.S. citizenship or permanent residency; background check required upon selection.
Work Environment:
  • Interns will engage in fieldwork, which may involve traversing various natural habitats, handling field equipment, and interacting with local flora and fauna. Personal protective equipment will be provided.
  • Office work will also be part of the role, involving data entry and analysis. Necessary office equipment will be supplied.
Compensation and Benefits:
  • Biweekly stipend of $1,200 based on a 40-hour workweek.
  • Monthly housing stipend up to $800.
  • Commuting stipend of up to $25 per week.
  • Health insurance coverage.
  • Funding for travel to professional development opportunities.
  • Eligibility for Public Land Corp status after completing 640 hours, offering non-competitive hiring status for certain federal positions.
