Overview:

Assess and deliver suitable special education support to designated children. Supervise the activities of assigned educational aides and assistants; maintain effective communication with families in a timely manner. Enhance professional growth in areas pertinent to the children enrolled in the program.

Responsibilities:
Key duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

1. Professional Responsibilities

  1. Implement educational programs tailored to the individual needs of students; ensure a safe and healthy classroom environment.
  2. Design daily lesson plans for both large and small group activities based on IEP objectives.
  3. Create a learning atmosphere that encourages incidental teaching, utilizing every opportunity to impart new, functional, and appropriate skills.
  4. Possess a comprehensive understanding of the New York State Standards for Special Education.
  5. Administer the New York State Alternate Assessment to assigned students.
  6. Screen new students and prepare educational observation documentation.
  7. Complete annual updates for each student, including current performance levels and recommended goals for the upcoming academic year.
  8. Participate in CSE meetings to coordinate therapeutic and educational strategies, either remotely or on-site.
  9. Engage with parents through written communication, phone calls, and in-person meetings regarding student progress.
  10. Collaborate with home service providers to ensure a holistic approach to each student's program.
  11. Establish and execute appropriate educational strategies to address the needs of assigned students.
  12. Perform related duties as necessary.
  13. Evaluate the progress of assigned students.
  14. Address significant behavioral issues through positive reinforcement strategies and/or seek assistance from the school psychologist.
  15. Maintain daily anecdotal records and data collection sheets for each IEP goal.
  16. Prepare lesson plans two weeks in advance.
  17. Complete a substitute teaching kit within two weeks of the school year start and update as needed.
  18. Submit quarterly progress reports.

2. Classroom Management

  1. Supervise and manage assigned educational aides in all aspects of the educational day.
  2. Ensure the health and safety of the classroom environment.
  3. Establish effective communication with parents of assigned children.
  4. Conduct monthly meetings with classroom staff.
  5. Clearly display allergies and medication information for each student (using first names only).
  6. Evaluate the performance of teacher aides/assistants in the classroom.
  7. Create and assign individual tasks for all teacher assistants/aides in the classroom.

3. Professional Conduct

  1. Maintain a professional demeanor at all times appropriate to an educational setting.
  2. Adhere to program-specific policies and procedures.
  3. Engage in program-wide activities and conduct oneself appropriately.
  4. Participate in activities and seek support to enhance knowledge in areas relevant to students in the assigned class.
  5. Assist student teachers in developing effective teaching practices.

4. Professional Development

  1. Attend and engage in required training sessions.
  2. Participate in supervisory meetings as requested.
  3. Demonstrate proficiency in administering standardized assessments to evaluate student ability levels.
  4. Lead interdisciplinary team meetings with students' parents and therapists to discuss progress, strategies, behaviors, updates, concerns, and goals.
  5. Collaborate with each student's clinical service providers to ensure a comprehensive educational program.
  6. Train classroom staff on the implementation of educational and clinical objectives.

5. Compliance with Organizational Policies

  1. Adhere to the Code of Ethical Conduct.
  2. Follow emergency and disaster preparedness protocols.
  3. Implement fire and safety prevention protocols.
  4. Comply with in-service education program requirements.
  5. Follow policies and procedures related to attendance, punctuality, appearance, and professional demeanor.
  6. Engage in job-related self-development activities.
  7. Practice infection control measures and procedures.
  8. Complete annual physical examinations and Mantoux testing.

6. Additional Duties

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the needs of students and visitors for each specific age group.
  2. Address safety and psychological needs of special age groups as appropriate in job functions.
  3. Meet the needs of diverse groups, including those who are hearing impaired or physically challenged, as well as various issues related to the program and facility.
  4. Maintain confidentiality of student and family information; refrain from discussing students in their presence.
  5. Exhibit courteous and considerate behavior in person and on the phone when interacting with children, families, visitors, vendors, and colleagues.
  6. Promote a positive and approachable demeanor, demonstrating a commitment to service.
  7. Respond promptly to requests from students and/or parents/guardians, referring to the appropriate team member when necessary, and inform supervisors of actions taken.
  8. Encourage positive relationships among coworkers, fostering teamwork and collaboration.
  9. Work respectfully and collaboratively with others.
  10. Take individual responsibility for delivering high-quality service.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Special Education is required, and enrollment in a Master's Program is necessary.
  • New York State Certification in Special Education is required.
