Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Culinary Specialist to join our team at the Texas Department of Aging & Disability Services. As a key member of our food service team, you will be responsible for preparing, cooking, and serving meals to our residents in a safe and sanitary manner.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare and cook meals for regular and modified diets, following established recipes and food service procedures.
  • Operate and maintain food service equipment, including ovens, stoves, and dishwashers, in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Supervise and train subordinate cooks in food preparation, meal assembly, and service procedures.
  • Ensure that all food service areas are clean and sanitized, and that food is stored and handled properly.
  • Participate in the distribution of food to designated areas, and serve meals to residents as needed.
  • Complete required records and reports, including equipment work orders and documentation of subordinate cooks' performance.
Requirements
  • Knowledge of food preparation methods, food storage standards, and sanitation regulations.
  • Knowledge of specialized diets and textures.
  • Ability to cook and bake, and to operate and sanitize food service equipment.
  • Ability to prepare large quantities of food following specific guidelines for diet and texture.
  • Ability to interpret and follow recipes.
  • Ability to serve food, clean dining and serving areas, and maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 25 pounds, bend, reach, stand, and walk on hard floors for extended periods.
  • Ability to work in hot and/or cold conditions, and to smell, taste, and see.
  • Ability to work harmoniously and productively with co-workers and residents.
Working Conditions

This position requires the ability to work in a fast-paced environment, with frequent interruptions and changing priorities. The successful candidate will be able to work independently and as part of a team, and will be able to adapt to changing circumstances and priorities.

Education and Experience

A high school diploma or equivalent is required, and a minimum of 2 years of experience in food service or a related field is preferred. A culinary arts degree or certification is also desirable.

Language

The primary language used in this position is English, and the ability to speak, read, and write in English is required.
