Position Overview:

The Clinical Laboratory Technician is responsible for executing established laboratory testing protocols and associated clerical, technical, and computer functions that necessitate a limited degree of independent judgment and interpretation. These tests are conducted under the direct oversight of a Supervisor or Technologist. Testing responsibilities may be concentrated in specific areas or span across various departments including Hematology, limited Microbiology, Clinical Chemistry, Urinalysis, and Serology.

Qualifications:

Candidates must fulfill all requirements to obtain licensure from NYSDOH or qualify for grandfathering in NYS as a Medical Laboratory Technician, if employed at a laboratory site in New York. A minimum of an associate's degree in Medical Laboratory Technology is required, while a bachelor's degree in the physical sciences along with relevant training may also be considered. Certification from the ASCP Board of Registry is preferred or candidates should be Board Eligible. A minimum of 12 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) is required annually.

Experience Requirements:

Candidates should possess a working knowledge of all laboratory sections and may choose to specialize in a specific area.

Key Responsibilities:

Under the guidance of a qualified manager or technologist, the Clinical Laboratory Technician will:

  • Perform accurate patient registration, including familiarity with insurance codes and billing procedures.
  • Conduct order entry and transcription of orders, ensuring proper routing and cancellations as per established protocols.
  • Communicate test results, normal ranges, and specimen requirements to authorized personnel promptly and as requested.
  • Report any technical issues to supervising staff or Section Supervisor.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area throughout the scheduled work period, including effective communication of pending tasks during shift changes.
  • Assist in inventory management and report supply shortages to the Section Supervisor.
  • Stay updated with laboratory practices, procedures, and techniques.
  • Participate in training by demonstrating techniques or methods when requested.
  • Perform phlebotomy as necessary, recognizing the importance of timely specimen collection for patient care.
  • Verify specimen identification and related orders for all samples drawn or received.
  • Adhere to established procedures for collecting and processing biological specimens for analysis.
  • Organize, prioritize, and distribute incoming laboratory workload, notifying the appropriate departments as needed.
  • Exhibit a professional and positive attitude while on duty.
  • Be available to work holidays, weekends, evenings, or night shifts as required by job assignments.
  • Observe safety protocols while performing job duties.
  • Comply with Guthrie Clinic and laboratory policies and state and federal regulations.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned, which may include typing, filing, answering telephones, and other tasks as necessary.
  • May be required to work on and off hospital campus and utilize personal transportation for job duties, with mileage compensation.
  • May be required to be on-call.
  • Competently execute assigned analytical tests or procedures that require limited independent judgment, referring inquiries to supervisory personnel as appropriate.
  • Recognize factors affecting measurement and results, taking appropriate actions according to established protocols or referring questions when necessary.
  • Identify equipment malfunctions, perform basic troubleshooting, and notify supervisory personnel as needed.
  • Recognize abnormal and critical results, documenting and communicating them per established procedures and referring them to designated supervisory personnel.
  • Operate instruments within the scope of training, following established protocols and quality control measures.
  • Conduct and document quality control procedures relevant to the situation, ensuring compliance with established standards.
  • Perform and document maintenance checks and adjustments on all relevant instruments and equipment, informing charge personnel or supervising technologists of potential repair needs after basic troubleshooting.
