Department Overview

The Mathematics and Statistics department at San Jose State University offers a comprehensive array of undergraduate and graduate programs, including specialized training for students pursuing a single subject credential in Mathematics.

Key Responsibilities

  • Instructors are expected to deliver undergraduate mathematics and mathematics education courses while also supervising student teachers. We are in search of exceptional educators capable of employing diverse, impactful teaching methodologies and possessing robust mathematical expertise.
  • Candidates should exhibit a deep understanding of the diverse needs of a varied student demographic, which includes differences in age, cultural backgrounds, ethnicities, primary languages, and academic readiness, through the use of inclusive course materials and teaching techniques.
  • Instructors must be adept at recognizing and addressing the varied needs of a diverse student body, including aspects such as age, abilities, cultural backgrounds, ethnicities, religions, economic statuses, primary languages, sexual orientations, gender identities, and academic preparations, through inclusive teaching strategies and advisement.
  • All courses must be organized within the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS).
  • Classes are required to be conducted as scheduled throughout the semester or term, adhering to the assigned mode of instruction (asynchronous, synchronous, bichronous, in-person, or hybrid).

Essential Qualifications

  • A Master's degree in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, or Statistics is mandatory.
  • A valid California single subject teaching credential in Mathematics is required.
  • Experience teaching at the high school level is essential.
  • Previous experience in teaching college-level mathematics courses is necessary.
  • Familiarity with the requirements for student teaching in credential programs is required.
  • Expertise in the California Teaching Performance Assessment (CalTPA) is essential for those involved in the credential program.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills are required.
  • A commitment to fostering student learning and promoting collaborative performance is essential.
  • Applicants should demonstrate sensitivity to the educational aspirations of a multicultural student body, which may have been developed through cross-cultural experiences, training, or teaching.

Compensation Details

Compensation and salary placement will be determined based on qualifications and experience. For more information regarding salary ranges, please refer to the relevant university policy.

Anticipated starting salary ranges are as follows:

L-A / Range 2 - $5007 - $5675
L-B / Range 3 - $5925 - $7125
L-C / Range 4 - $6500 - $8982
L-D / Range 5 - $8184 - $9854

Note that the above salary ranges represent anticipated monthly rates for full-time academic year faculty, with part-time rates being prorated. Faculty members receive six monthly payments per semester.

Employment Conditions

Faculty members are required to complete CSU employee training as mandated based on their roles. Employment is contingent upon proof of eligibility to work in the United States. Offers of employment may be rescinded if background checks reveal disqualifying information or if it is discovered that the candidate has withheld or falsified information.

Appointment is subject to budgetary and enrollment considerations and follows the order of assignment provisions outlined in the collective bargaining agreement.
