PRIMARY PURPOSE:

To facilitate learning activities and experiences for students with special needs, aimed at fostering their intellectual, emotional, physical, and social development. This role involves the adaptation of curricula and the preparation of instructional materials tailored to the abilities of each student. The teacher may work in various capacities including self-contained, team, departmental, or itinerant assignments.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Certification:

A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution is required.

A valid teaching certificate in Texas with the necessary endorsements for special education is mandatory.

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Understanding of the unique needs of students in the designated area.

Familiarity with the Individual Education Plan (IEP) process, including goal setting and implementation.

Ability to modify curriculum and instructional methods to accommodate special needs.

Strong communication skills are essential.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Probationary/Term Contract: 187 days.

SALARY:

Compensation is based on Pay Grade T60 (Teacher Classification) as determined by the Board of Trustees.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Attendance:

Consistent and reliable attendance is crucial for this role.

Instructional Strategies:

Collaborate with students, parents, and staff to create IEPs for each assigned student. Implement educational, therapeutic, or skill development programs and maintain documentation of preparation as required. Assess student learning styles and plan appropriate instructional strategies, activities, and materials that reflect an understanding of their needs. Deliver subject matter effectively in accordance with IEP guidelines, utilizing various instructional techniques and technology. Work alongside classroom teachers to adapt regular curricula as necessary and support special education students in mainstream classes. Regularly participate in IEP Committee meetings. Contribute to the selection of educational resources and instructional media.

Student Growth and Development:

Conduct ongoing assessments of student progress through both formal and informal evaluations. Provide or oversee personal care, medical assistance, and feeding of students as outlined in their IEPs. Take responsibility for extracurricular activities or other assigned duties. Consult with district and external resources regarding the educational, social, medical, and personal needs of students as necessary.

Classroom Management and Organization:

Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and supports the physical, social, and emotional development of students. Manage student behavior and implement disciplinary measures, including crisis intervention and physical restraint as required by IEPs. Collaborate with classroom teachers on behavior management strategies in accordance with IEPs. Ensure the safety of students, equipment, materials, and facilities. Oversee the work of instructional aides, if applicable.

Other Responsibilities:

Stay informed and comply with all federal, state, district, and school regulations and policies related to special education. Maintain open communication through conferences with parents, students, and colleagues. Foster professional relationships with parents, students, and fellow educators. Engage in professional development activities to enhance job-related skills. Compile, maintain, and file all required reports, records, and documentation. Attend faculty meetings and participate in staff committees as needed.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Direct the work of instructional aides, if assigned.

Tools/Equipment Used: Personal computer and other instructional tools.

Posture: Prolonged standing; frequent kneeling, bending, pushing, pulling, and twisting.

Motion: Frequent walking.

Lifting: May require regular heavy lifting (45 pounds or more) and assisting students with physical disabilities.

Environment: May involve exposure to biological hazards; primarily indoor work with some outdoor activities; regular exposure to noise.

Mental Demands: Must maintain emotional control under stress and may work irregular hours.
