Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Hospital Communications Specialist to join our team at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. As a key member of our Healthcare Information Systems team, you will play a critical role in coordinating responses to emergency situations, screening and directing communications, and operating and maintaining our hospital paging system and other hardware and software.

Key Responsibilities
  • Coordinate responses to multiple emergency situations, including medical and health care personnel.
  • Screen and direct communications between hospital staff, patients, and the public.
  • Operate and maintain the hospital paging system and other hardware and software.
  • Monitor alarms and provide emergency escalation for alarms.
  • Maintain the release of information status in the patient profile in the hospital inpatient directory.
  • Assist users with service and information related to communication technologies.
  • Provide call processing and on-call services for outside and affiliated agencies.
  • Screen calls and direct communications among faculty, staff, and students; patients and visitors; law enforcement agencies; and the general public.
  • Place long distance and international calls.
  • Establish multiple-party conference calls and monitored calls.
  • Respond to incoming calls on the Telecommunications Device for the Deaf.
  • Operate and maintain the Amcom call processing system.
  • Operate and maintain the Hospital Paging System and Pagers.
  • Understand and apply basic knowledge of computer technology and various software packages.
  • Maintain unit quality control.
  • Provide input in the development of unit policies and procedures.
  • Perform job functions efficiently and effectively.
Requirements
  • High school graduation or equivalent.
  • Any combination of clerical experience and/or college or university coursework equivalent to two years of full-time employment.
  • Experience in a call center or equivalent communications environment using computerized systems and involving responses to immediate decision and action demands.
