Job Title: Hospital Communications Specialist

University of Iowa Health Care is seeking a skilled Hospital Communications Specialist to join our team. As a key member of our Health Care Information Systems (HCIS) team, you will play a critical role in ensuring seamless communication between hospital staff, patients, and the public.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Coordinate responses to emergency situations, ensuring timely and effective communication between internal and external staff.
  • Facilitate medical communications during emergency situations, utilizing your knowledge of medical terminology and telecommunication systems.
  • Execute hospital-wide communication procedures for major system outages, inclement weather, and disaster situations, demonstrating your ability to work in high-pressure environments.
  • Monitor alarms and provide emergency escalation for alarms, showcasing your attention to detail and ability to prioritize tasks.
  • Maintain the release of information status in the patient profile in the hospital inpatient directory, ensuring accurate and timely information.
  • Assist users with service and information related to communication technologies, providing exceptional customer service and support.
  • Provide call processing and on-call services for outside and affiliated agencies, demonstrating your ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Screen calls and direct communications among faculty, staff, and students; patients and visitors; law enforcement agencies; and the general public, utilizing your strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Place long distance and international calls, as needed, and establish multiple-party conference calls and monitored calls, showcasing your technical expertise.
  • Respond to incoming calls on the Telecommunications Device for the Deaf, demonstrating your commitment to accessibility and inclusivity.
  • Operate and maintain the Amcom call processing system and the Hospital Paging System and Pagers, ensuring seamless communication and minimizing downtime.
  • Understand and apply basic knowledge of computer technology and various software packages, staying up-to-date with the latest advancements in the field.
  • Maintain unit quality control, ensuring high standards of performance and quality in all aspects of your work.
  • Provide input in the development of unit policies and procedures, contributing to the growth and improvement of our team.
  • Perform job functions efficiently and effectively, prioritizing tasks and managing your time to meet deadlines.
Requirements:
  • High school graduation or equivalent and;
  • Any combination of clerical experience and/or college or university coursework which is equivalent to two years of full-time employment.
  • Experience (typically 3-6 months) in a call center or equivalent communications environment using computerized systems and involving responses to immediate decision and action demands.
