Job Summary

The Health Information Management Specialist is responsible for ensuring the accuracy, completeness, and confidentiality of patient health information. This role involves managing and maintaining patient records, processing requests for medical information, and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities
  • Record Management Functions
    • Verify and update patient health information in paper and electronic formats
    • Protect patient confidentiality and maintain the integrity of medical records
  • EMPI Functions
    • Monitor data integrity and research duplicate medical records
    • Identify and correct patient overlays according to established protocols
  • Scanning Functions
    • Prepare, scan, and index protected patient health information documentation
    • Follow quality measures for documents scanned into the electronic medical record
  • ROI Functions
    • Process requests for release of protected patient health information
    • Upload and burn external CDs/DVDs and/or print and digitize films upon request
    • Review patient health information and coordinate the release of other types of records
  • Transcription Functions (Referral Letters)
    • Monitor and process Referral Letters in the EPIC letter queue
    • Ensure all notes are attached to letters
    • Review Communication Manager for CC's to be sent
  • Inpatient Functions
    • Re-analyze medical records for completeness and apply deficiencies as needed
    • Coordinate the weekly suspension process and daily operative scheduling suspension process
  • General Functions
    • Cultivate a shared vision for the department and uphold departmental standards
    • Perform other duties as assigned by management
Qualifications
  • Education and Experience
    • High School Diploma or equivalent and proof of completed vocational certificate or degree in the HIM field
    • 1 year of healthcare experience or 2 years of business and/or HIM experience in lieu of vocational certificate
  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
    • Ability to comprehend and follow established policies and procedures
    • Ability to handle multiple tasks and adjust to changes in a fast-paced environment
    • Excellent customer service, interpersonal, and communication skills
