Job Overview

Position: Director of Reinsurance
Location: Kansas City, MO

This role is pivotal in overseeing the Reinsurance Division, which entails the management of reinsurance for all categories of life and health insurance, whether ceded or assumed. As a critical component of Risk Management, the Reinsurance Division supports various functions, including marketing, finance, actuarial science, and investment sectors. The individual in this position will lead the execution of all risk transfer agreements across the life and health sectors, while also planning, directing, and implementing policies and procedures related to the reinsurance program. This includes conducting financial assessments of reinsurers, preparing treaty documentation, and ensuring effective communication of treaty obligations throughout the organization.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Direct the implementation of strategies concerning risk transfer, aligning the Reinsurance Division's functional strategies with overarching strategic goals.
  • Manage the execution of risk transfer agreements across all business lines, including those related to affiliates and affiliated reinsurance captives.
  • Engage in negotiations and the development of risk transfer solutions that facilitate organizational growth.
  • Oversee the collection, summarization, and presentation of data to reinsurers and assuming insurers.
  • Ensure that robust controls and governance are established for reinsurance processes, collaborating with both internal and external auditors as necessary.
  • Maintain and enhance relationships with reinsurers and distributors, managing over 50 key relationships.
  • Promote risk transfer objectives and evaluate marketing and risk transfer opportunities.
  • Perform additional related duties as assigned.

Required Competencies:

  • Outstanding verbal and written communication, interpersonal, analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  • Proven ability to effectively address a diverse range of reinsurance issues.
  • Strong understanding of financial and actuarial matters related to ceded and assumed risks.
  • Demonstrated management capabilities.

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of ten years of experience in direct and assumed risk transfer.
  • A college degree or equivalent educational background.
  • In-depth technical knowledge of insurance company operations, including reserving and capital requirements.
  • Advanced communication skills, both written and oral, suitable for engaging with senior leadership.
  • Extensive knowledge of life, annuity, and health insurance products, as well as underwriting and pricing methodologies.
  • Highly developed negotiation and relationship management skills, with proficiency in contract interpretation and negotiation in collaboration with legal counsel.
