Job Title: Principal Mechanical Engineer

We are seeking a highly qualified Principal Mechanical Engineer to oversee our engineering initiatives. Below is the detailed job description:

General Overview

This role involves advanced supervisory and professional mechanical engineering responsibilities, focusing on the design and specification of mechanical systems for water treatment facilities and pumping stations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Directs and evaluates the work of mechanical engineering staff; provides feedback and recommendations to enhance performance.
  • Monitors mechanical operations; assesses maintenance schedules and operational compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Leads engineering assessments, testing, and evaluations; investigates new mechanical technologies and processes, providing cost-benefit analyses and recommendations.
  • Oversees the creation of detailed designs and specifications for mechanical systems across various facilities.
  • Manages contract negotiations and administration; develops specifications and cost estimates for required materials and services.
  • Handles administrative tasks related to engineering service contracts; ensures contractor submissions meet established specifications.
  • Supervises the implementation and modification of plant equipment and processes; oversees equipment installation activities.
  • Offers technical guidance and innovative solutions to staff regarding maintenance and operational methodologies; fosters collaboration among teams to achieve organizational goals.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Develops and manages budget forecasts and financial reports.
  • Generates documentation and reports concerning maintenance, operations, and repairs.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Work Environment

This position may require exposure to various mechanical equipment, high noise levels, and potentially unpleasant odors. Work may be conducted in diverse weather conditions throughout the facility, alongside standard office environments.

Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • In-depth understanding of mechanical engineering principles, practices, and methodologies.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of mechanics and related engineering disciplines.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.

Mandatory Qualifications

Must hold a Professional Engineer registration in the State of Illinois.

Minimum Experience Requirements

A bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from an accredited institution, coupled with six years of relevant mechanical engineering experience. A minimum of four years of this experience should relate to the organization's operations, with at least one year in a supervisory capacity over licensed engineers.

Substitution Policy

Graduate-level coursework in mechanical engineering may substitute for non-supervisory experience on a year-for-year basis, up to a maximum of two years.

Promotional Criteria

  • One year of service in the role of Senior Mechanical Engineer within the organization.
  • Possession of a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering and one year of service as a Senior Engineer within the organization.
