About the Role:

Gresham Smith is seeking a highly skilled Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our Industrial Market team. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for providing technical expertise and support to our Business Development Principals, as well as serving as the primary technical representative for the firm in pursuing, proposing, and securing consulting services for manufacturing clients.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in preparing professional proposals for mechanical consulting services for potential projects, ensuring that technical issues and related service offerings are clearly conveyed to clients.
  • Serve as the technical expert for the firm in mechanical engineering, providing guidance and support to clients through the feasibility, programming, and planning stages of projects, continuing through the final engineering design.
  • Conceptualize the initial mechanical design approach for major phases of large industrial projects, emphasizing the specification of equipment, calculation of loads, ductwork and pipe sizing, selection of HVAC equipment, and interpretation of engineering drawings.
  • Prepare engineering reports, plans, and specifications for industrial projects, ensuring compliance with relevant codes and standards.
  • Design and produce engineering drawings and instructions based on calculations, revising and interpreting engineering drawings as needed.
  • Conceive, plan, and conduct research in complex problem areas, developing innovative solutions to unusual engineering challenges.
  • Prepare plans and technical specifications, contract documents, and estimates, ensuring accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Select and size equipment for systems, ensuring optimal performance and efficiency.
  • Supervise the installation, repair, and replacement of systems, ensuring specifications and safety standards are met.
  • Participate in contract bidding and administration, coordinating projects with City, State, and County officials, and other outside agencies.
  • Lead the coordination of projects with clients, contractors, outside consultants, and firm staff, communicating and interacting with project team members, client representatives, review agencies, and others as needed.
  • Develop and implement research plans to resolve complex problems, including conflicting design requirements, unsuitability of conventional materials, and difficult coordination requirements.
  • Stay up-to-date with relevant codes and standards, including ASHRAE, ASME, NFPA, and the IBC code set.
  • Check and approve shop drawings, ensuring accuracy and compliance with specifications.
  • Develop innovative solutions to unusual engineering problems, demonstrating expertise and creativity.
  • Communicate effectively with clients, colleagues, and other stakeholders, both verbally and in writing.
  • Proficiently interpret and create PFDs, P&IDs, and UFDs, ensuring accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Familiar with plumbing system design, including working knowledge of common plumbing and fire protection codes and standards.
  • Perform other duties as required, including travel to job sites.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Minimum of 13+ years of experience in mechanical engineering systems design, preferably with a consulting firm for Industrial/Manufacturing/Process projects.
  • Professional Engineer license required.
  • Outstanding knowledge of ASHRAE, IBC code set, and NFPA codes standards.
  • Ability to multi-task and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong team player.

Desirable Skills:

  • Digitally curious and comfortable working with coding and automation.
  • Design automation skills, including the application of parametric design tools such as Dynamo and Grasshopper.
  • Software coding skills, especially with Python and/or C#.
  • Working with Revit's API.
  • Power BI for data visualization.
