Position Summary:


The Nursing Services Supervisor is responsible for overseeing nursing operations to ensure the delivery of safe, effective, and efficient patient care.

This role is a vital component of the Management Team, with responsibilities that encompass:
assigning, assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating clinical care for the nursing unit(s).

The performance of this position is measured through objective criteria, focusing on enhancing the skills and competencies of nursing staff, including registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, and other personnel assigned to the unit(s).


The Nursing Services Supervisor reports to the Nurse Manager or designated representative and supervises registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, nursing aides, nursing service clerks, monitor technicians, and other necessary staff on the assigned unit(s).

This role involves regular interaction with employees, patients, their families, visitors, and medical staff.

Key Responsibilities:


Formulate, implement, and assess unit(s) goals, objectives, policies, procedures, and standards of care that contribute to the achievement of unit(s) objectives.


Oversee and coordinate the activities and responsibilities of unit personnel to meet established objectives for quality outcomes, patient satisfaction, cost-effectiveness, and adherence to budgetary constraints.

Integrate total quality management principles into hospital operations.


Delegate tasks to registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, nursing aides, unit clerks, monitor technicians, and other essential personnel to fulfill patient care objectives.


Ensure continuity of patient care by planning staff assignments based on the competency, education, and training of unit personnel in relation to patient care needs.


Foster effective communication among personnel, physicians, and other staff to ensure continuity, coordination, and collaboration in delivering appropriate healthcare services.

Maintain proficiency in relevant technologies to provide informed recommendations regarding new services, products, and equipment.

Conduct interviews, select, evaluate, discipline, and terminate personnel, or recommend such actions as necessary, in accordance with hospital policies and procedures.


Ensure that assigned employees receive adequate orientation and participate in required in-service training to maintain proper licensure or certification.

Maintain personnel records and related information as required.

Develop work schedules for unit(s) assigned, including vacation, leaves of absence, call-ins, call-offs, and other time-off requirements.

Effectively manage all employee relations activities within the hospital.

Participate in management meetings and contribute to the development of management and supervisory personnel policies and procedures.


Apply advanced knowledge regarding clinical matters, serving as a role model and resource, including performing direct patient care as necessary.


Direct, oversee, and assist in the delivery of patient care, including, but not limited to, the following functions: Assist in emergency situations.

Train new and existing personnel through instruction and demonstration of safe and proper working procedures.

Support assigned personnel in task performance when requested.

Assist assigned personnel in troubleshooting or adjusting new equipment during installation or testing phases.


Help assigned personnel meet patient care requirements without delay that could compromise safe patient care until additional assistance is available.


Step in for assigned personnel to prevent interruptions in safe patient care until additional staff are located and available for duty.


Perform or assist in clinical treatments, procedures, and comprehensive patient care that may require expert skills and judgment in accordance with established standards.

Carry out duties related to patient care not otherwise specified.

Qualifications:
Education

  • Graduation from an accredited nursing program and maintenance of a current, unrestricted license in the assigned state.
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree preferred; a minimum of two (2) years of relevant experience, with five (5) years preferred, demonstrating management potential and proficient clinical skills.
  • BLS certification required; ACLS certification preferred, to be obtained prior to the conclusion of orientation.
Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities


Prior to assignment, the Nursing Services Supervisor must successfully complete a critical care course approved by the Chief Nursing Officer and demonstrate proficiency with equipment, diagnostic responsibilities, and procedures required of the critical care nurse.


Such coursework shall include:

  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation and management of an obstructed airway.
  • EKG interpretation.
  • Drug therapy, including emergency drug therapy via the I.V. route or other routes typically reserved for physicians.
  • Hemodynamic monitoring.
  • Critical care procedures.
The Nursing Services Supervisor shall receive comprehensive orientation to policies, procedures, and equipment, including safety protocols, infection control practices, and performance improvement initiatives.
