Experienced Credit Analyst

Position Overview:

Great Elm Capital Management, Inc. is on the lookout for a skilled Credit Analyst to bolster its senior investment team and report directly to the Head of Research. The ideal candidate will be responsible for conducting thorough analyses across various sectors and the firms within them, providing informed investment recommendations. A strong background in credit research, particularly in high yield bonds, leveraged loans, preferred stocks, and reorganized equities, is essential, covering a broad risk spectrum from deeply distressed to performing assets. Exceptional analytical and interpersonal skills are crucial for success in this role.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform comprehensive credit analysis to evaluate the risks associated with current portfolio holdings and prospective investments, focusing on both business trends and detailed credit document scrutiny.
  • Proactively generate and share investment ideas by engaging with the Investment Committee.
  • Create intricate financial models with projections that support investment theses.
  • Continuously monitor investments, updating financial models and internal tracking documents to reflect changes in fundamental factors and relative value assessments.
  • Build and sustain relationships with sell-side traders, analysts, legal advisors, and buy-side entities to facilitate the exchange of credit insights, market intelligence, and co-investment opportunities.
  • Address internal inquiries regarding credit issues and market conditions.
  • Serve as a backup for the trading desk, executing trades within approved parameters as necessary.

Qualifications:

  • Strong communication skills to effectively present and advocate for ideas to internal stakeholders, including the Investment Committee.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in credit research and/or investment banking, with substantial knowledge of financial modeling, valuation techniques, and credit documentation.
  • A sector generalist with robust financial modeling capabilities and excellent writing skills.
  • Extensive experience in analyzing credit documents and a solid understanding of their implications for both performing and distressed investment scenarios.
  • Able to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, demonstrating a commitment to producing consistent, high-quality work.
  • Exhibit a high level of integrity, energy, and adaptability, along with a positive, team-oriented attitude.
  • Experience in fixed income markets and familiarity with challenges associated with high yield and distressed debt.
  • Proficient in executing trades within Credit Markets.
  • Strong interpersonal skills are essential, with effective communication abilities conducive to relationship building.

Education & Experience:

  • A Bachelor's Degree is required.
  • CFA designation is preferred.
  • Experience in investing within the technology, media, and healthcare sectors is advantageous but not mandatory.
  • An MBA or Master's Degree in accounting, finance, or economics is a plus.
