Position Summary

The Infrastructure Efficiency and Engineering (IEE) team at DfT serves as a vital center of technical expertise within the central Portfolio & Project Delivery Directorate (PPDD). Under the leadership of the Chief Engineer, our team comprises highly skilled engineers and project managers committed to the efficient and effective delivery of DfT's projects and programs across various transport modes.

As a Senior Technical Advisor, you will play a crucial role in influencing the Department's extensive portfolio of transport projects, collaborating closely with the Directorate and broader project teams to ensure the successful and efficient delivery of major initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Utilize your engineering expertise to critically assess design specifications and assumptions, providing essential insights to senior decision-makers.
  • Review technical ALB evidence to advise the Government and lead the preparation of briefings and reports for Ministers, Boards, and senior leadership.
  • Collaborate with technical, sponsor, and analytical teams to evaluate emerging cost estimates, advising major project sponsors on their robustness and efficiency (including developing cost benchmarking analyses in line with Infrastructure and Projects Authority Best Practices).
  • Establish and implement processes for ongoing monitoring and enhancement of cost and schedule efficiency for major projects at various lifecycle stages.
  • Enhance IEE's and DfT's overall capability in understanding the cost implications of project options early in the project lifecycle.

Candidate Profile

About You

To excel in this position, you should possess:

  • Experience as an engineer on major infrastructure projects, particularly from the client side, with a focus on cost and schedule control, robust evidence gathering, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Significant involvement in the development of innovative and technically complex infrastructure initiatives.
  • Experience in producing evidence-based reports and presentations, effectively communicating findings to both technical and non-technical senior audiences.
  • A qualification in engineering with substantial experience in the transport infrastructure sector, especially in a client-side project delivery context.

Additional Information

A minimum of 60% of your working hours should be spent at your primary workplace, although attending other locations for official duties may also count towards this requirement.

This role may involve occasional travel to other DfT locations and site visits within the UK.

Qualifications

A degree in Engineering (or a related field) at MEng/MSc level or equivalent, or BEng/BSc level with experience in the construction sector, along with chartered status (registered as CEng with the Engineering Council) or working towards full accreditation.
