Role Description

The Infrastructure Efficiency and Engineering (IEE) team within the Department for Transport serves as a vital center of technical expertise, operating under the central Portfolio & Project Delivery Directorate (PPDD). Under the leadership of the Chief Engineer, our team comprises highly skilled engineers and project managers dedicated to ensuring the efficient and effective delivery of DfT’s projects and programs across various transport modes.

As a Technical Advisor, you will play a crucial role in shaping the Department’s extensive portfolio of transport projects, collaborating closely with the Directorate and broader project teams to guarantee the successful and efficient execution of major initiatives.

This position offers a challenging yet rewarding opportunity to apply your technical expertise to influence some of Europe’s largest transport infrastructure projects, unlocking transformative economic benefits for the nation.

Key Responsibilities:

• Utilize your engineering knowledge to provide technical guidance across DfT’s major project portfolio, which may involve conducting analyses (such as cost benchmarking) and presenting results to senior stakeholders.
• Review technical ALB evidence to advise the Government and prepare briefings and reports for Ministers, Boards (including the DfT Investment, Portfolio and Delivery Committee), and senior leadership.
• Champion the Engineering profession within the Department on behalf of the Chief Engineer, collaborating with colleagues in the Chief Scientific Adviser’s office and the Government Office for Science to manage 'EngineeringLIVE webinar events.'
• Facilitate cross-Directorate collaboration by overseeing IEE’s presence on the Project Delivery intranet Portal and implementing process improvement initiatives in partnership with colleagues across PPDD.
• Assist with the team’s broader administrative requirements, including organizing site visits and managing 'Plans on a Page.'

Candidate Profile

To excel in this position, you should:

• Hold a degree in Engineering (or a related field) at BEng/BSc level or equivalent, or possess experience in the construction sector, with incorporated status (registered as IEng with the Engineering Council) and be working towards chartership.
• Have a track record of producing evidence-based reports and presentations, effectively communicating findings to both technical and non-technical senior audiences.
• Demonstrate strong written communication skills and verbal abilities, conveying technical concepts clearly and concisely to diverse audiences.
• Be capable of applying engineering principles within a policy framework and show a commitment to promoting the engineering profession.

Additional Information

It is expected that a minimum of 60% of your working hours will be spent at your primary workplace, although you may also be required to attend other locations for official duties or carry out detached duties at different DfT workplaces.

This role may involve occasional travel to other DfT locations and site visits within the UK.
