Job Summary

The HIM Specialist plays a vital role in ensuring the accuracy and completeness of medical records. This position is responsible for assembling and analyzing medical records in a timely and accurate manner, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements. The HIM Specialist will also be responsible for adding deficiencies to the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and tracking incomplete records. Additionally, this role involves monitoring transcribed reports to ensure they are properly imaged and stored in the correct account number.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assemble and analyze medical records to ensure accuracy and completeness
  • Add deficiencies to the EMR and track incomplete records
  • Monitor transcribed reports to ensure proper imaging and storage
  • Prepare and scan medical record documents for permanent storage and retrieval
  • Process authorized requests for Release of Information while maintaining confidentiality and security of patient data

Qualifications

Education/Skills:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree in HIM-related field preferred

Work Experience:

  • Working knowledge of HIM Department operations, including completion of medical records, release of confidential information, and HIPAA guidelines
  • Communication, telephone skills, and proficiency in Microsoft Office suite products, including Excel and Word

Certifications/Licenses:

  • RHIA/RHIT Certification (within 1 year of employment preferred)
