Job Summary:

The Transportation Operations Manager will oversee the overall transportation program, ensuring safe and efficient operations. This role will manage a team of transportation staff, develop and implement transportation systems, and maintain accurate records.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage the transportation program, including buses, service vehicles, and other passenger vehicles
  • Supervise transportation staff, including hiring, promotion, employee evaluation, and disciplinary actions
  • Develop and implement transportation systems, including scheduling, reservations, and reporting methods
  • Maintain accurate records, including inventory, payroll, and safety records
  • Conduct regular inspections of transportation equipment and processes to ensure efficiency, safety, and sustainability
  • Develop and implement cost efficiency measures in transportation operations
  • Provide training programs for departmental employees on effective operation and compliance with departmental and regulatory agency requirements
  • Enforce life safety regulations and requirements
  • Perform pre/post trip inspections, drive buses for school functions, and perform routine maintenance on school-owned or leased transportation equipment
  • Make recommendations for the development of operational budgets
  • Provide timely budget, vendor, contract, and invoice management

Requirements:

  • 5 years of comparable supervisory experience in Fleet Maintenance and Transportation, including direct supervision of staff and program development
  • Demonstrated working knowledge, skills, and expertise in Fleet Maintenance and Transportation Systems
  • Working knowledge of transportation, safety, reservations, scheduling, and reporting methods, systems, and procedures
  • Excellent verbal communication and listening skills with high attention to clarity and detail
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently and as part of a team
  • Strong knowledge of cloud-based systems, word processing, and spreadsheet software, and Windows platform
  • Experience in and commitment to the ongoing development and maintenance of an inclusive campus community
  • Excellent reading, writing, and comprehension skills
  • Ability to develop and maintain accurate records
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills
  • Knowledge of, and prior training involving, Federal and State occupational hazard and transportation safety programs
  • Ability to Pass VDOT physical examination
  • Valid Commercial Drivers License (CDL, Class B with passenger and air brake endorsement)
  • Associates Degree or higher preferred
  • Valid Virginia driver's license

Physical Requirements:

  • Manual coordination including finger dexterity, eye/hand/foot coordination, distinguishing between colors, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crawling, reaching, handling, fingering, feeling, depth perception, and hearing
  • Must be able to lift, lower, carry, push, and pull objects up to 50lbs unassisted
  • May be subjected to extreme heat and cold temperatures
  • Will be subjected to motor and/or machine noise
