About the Role

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Legal Assistant to join our team at Michigan Legal Services. As a Legal Assistant - Housing Advocate, you will play a critical role in addressing eviction cases and other landlord/tenant matters.

Key Responsibilities
  • Interview clients with pending eviction or landlord/tenant-related issues and provide guidance on their rights and options.
  • Draft correspondence to clients and government agencies, ensuring timely and accurate communication.
  • Prepare intake paperwork and assist clients in addressing landlord/tenant issues.
  • Coordinate with social services workers to resolve issues and ensure effective support for clients.
  • Draft letters to landlords, housing inspectors, and government offices, and prepare pleadings for court under the supervision of staff attorneys.
  • Perform other landlord/tenant-related tasks as assigned by the executive director or program coordinator.
  • Conduct legal research and collect and track documents for client projects.
  • Assist with administrative tasks and maintain confidentiality of client information.
Requirements
  • HSD required; a bachelor's degree or associate degree in social services preferred.
  • 1-2 years of Legal Assistant experience preferred.
  • Excellent writing, research, and organizational skills, with a strong attention to detail.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office and intermediate computer literacy.
  • The ability to learn quickly and balance multiple projects at once.
  • Displays original thinking and creativity and meets challenges with resourcefulness.
  • Requires a courteous, patient individual with the ability to work calmly under stress.
