About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Pathology Assistant to join our team at the Detroit Medical Center. As a Pathology Assistant, you will play a critical role in supporting the Anatomic Pathology department, ensuring the accurate and efficient processing of patient specimens.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in the training of staff members in Anatomic Pathology and specimen processing policies and procedures.
  • Participate in problem-solving and troubleshooting of routine or moderately complex processing and/or Anatomic Pathology issues.
  • Enforce and comply with departmental safety policies and procedures, including the use of personal protective equipment.
  • Prioritize incoming specimens and process patient specimens using specialized techniques in accordance with departmental safety and OSHA guidelines.
  • Set up and maintain designated work areas and equipment, ensuring that equipment is operational for appropriate use.
  • Collaborate with staff and Pathologists for all Anatomic Pathology processes, including labeling specimens, vials, and slides, and programming and loading imagers, stainers, and other equipment.
  • Generate labels and attach them to specimens according to pre-established test requirements.
  • Ensure specimen integrity by verifying patient identification.
  • Assign accession numbers to all specimens and process them according to protocol.
  • Prepare specimens to be sent to reference labs according to pre-established test requirements and record incoming results onto appropriate logs.
  • Perform special processing of selective specimens, such as acid wash, cell block, and decalcification, according to established guidelines.
  • Maintain daily records, including specimen logs/worksheets, send-outs, and special procedure logs, and input data for workload.
  • Accurately enter patient demographics data into the laboratory computer system and detect and correct errors according to laboratory policies and quality standards.
  • Maintain a neat and clean work area, stock storage areas with supplies, and inventory as necessary.
  • Clean equipment and small instruments and perform simple inspection and maintenance of laboratory equipment.
  • Conduct routine quality control checks on equipment and report unusual findings to the Supervisor or Lead Designee.
