Job Overview

Position Title: Student Transportation Assistant

Location: Transportation Hub

Compensation: $16.01 per hour

Reports To: Director of Student Transportation or designated representative

Bargaining Unit: AFSCME

Benefits: Eligible for benefits

Remote Work: Not applicable for remote work

In alignment with the collective agreement between the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) and the Board of Education, this position is now open.

Role Summary:

The Student Transportation Assistant plays a vital role within the Office of Student Transportation, ensuring the safe and efficient transport of students to and from educational institutions and related activities. This position requires the ability to foster positive relationships with students while adhering to departmental guidelines and demonstrating professionalism when interacting with parents, educators, and staff. Responsibilities include documenting incidents, accidents, and attendance, all while supporting the overarching goals of the department.

Required Qualifications:
  • Minimum age of 18 years.
  • Availability for split shifts, including early mornings and afternoons.
  • Proven strong attendance history.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated responsibility, reliability, and punctuality.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to changing circumstances.
  • Exemplary role model for students.
  • Strong problem-solving and conflict resolution skills.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist students with physical or mental impairments during boarding and disembarking.
  • Support parents or guardians in safely escorting students to the bus.
  • Provide assistance with lifting students as needed.
  • Maintain an accurate roster of student riders, including names and addresses.
  • Ensure order and vigilance at all times to guarantee student safety during transport.
  • Monitor and assist with the use of safety equipment such as seat belts and wheelchairs.
  • Participate in training workshops as required.
  • Carry out additional duties as assigned.
Security Clearance:

Internal Candidates: Current employees of the Detroit Public Schools Community District are not required to undergo a new security clearance unless the new position necessitates a different background check.

External Candidates: All new hires must undergo a criminal background check in accordance with Michigan law. Details regarding the required checks will be provided during the hiring process.
