Job Description:

Under the guidance of the Virology and Immunology Branch Manager and the Clinical Virology Team Lead, this Senior Molecular Biologist III will perform highly complex molecular testing following standard or developmental protocols to identify viruses in clinical specimens using Biosafety Level 2 and 3 practices and procedures.

The ideal candidate will manage the progress of each specimen, ensuring delays are avoided, and enter and validate results into the laboratory information system. They will also assist with the development and implementation of additional molecular and diagnostic techniques, ensuring standard protocols and proper quality controls are followed for all tests performed in the laboratory.

This role will serve as a senior Molecular Biologist for the Clinical Virology Team, assuming the duties of the Team Lead as required. The successful candidate will also be responsible for investigating quality assurance problems and recommending and implementing approved corrective actions.

Essential Job Functions:
  1. Develop and perform highly complex molecular biology work under the technical guidance of the Virology and Immunology Branch Manager and Clinical Virology Team Lead.
  2. Plan and conduct analysis of specimens using advanced molecular methods for the diagnosis and/or detection of viruses, including but not limited to influenza, measles, mumps, Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV), Zika, chikungunya, and dengue in clinical (serum, urine, and other) samples.
  3. Process clinical samples in accordance with current standard operating procedures and regulations.
  4. Extract nucleic acid using both manual and automated extraction methods and perform nucleic acid amplifications using real-time and conventional PCR.
  5. Coordinate all aspects of influenza laboratory testing surveillance activities, including coordination with CDC to submit positive and unsubtypeable specimens to the National Influenza Reference Center (NIRC) or CDC as required.
  6. Verify and review molecular biology test results, enter, review, and validate results in the laboratory information system, and add appropriate comments.
  7. Investigate quality assurance problems and recommend and implement approved corrective actions.
  8. Research new procedures and report on their usefulness, maintaining current knowledge of literature and evaluating new procedures to make recommendations to improve or replace existing procedures.
  9. Based on the work area, consistently comply with DSHS Laboratory, local, state, and federal guidelines to ensure a safe functioning laboratory.
