Job Description:

Under general supervision, the Molecular Biologist II identifies arthropods, including mosquitoes, for arbovirus isolation and molecular testing. The incumbent trains others on entomological procedures as needed and participates in customer service problem-solving. They assist the Arbovirus-Entomology Team Leader in maintaining proper workflow and stock levels of materials and supplies.

Essential Job Functions:
  1. Coordinates the identification of mosquitoes submitted for arbovirus isolation, ensures adequate supplies, and prepares collection and shipping materials.
  2. Performs complex molecular testing for arbovirus identification, including RNA extractions, real-time PCR, and result analysis.
  3. Coordinates and performs laboratory procedures for arbovirus isolation and identification, including cell culture maintenance and immunofluorescent antibody staining.
  4. Enters and validates results in the laboratory information system and notifies appropriate parties of significant results.
  5. Prepares media and reagents for arbovirus diagnostic work, including quality control testing.
  6. Prepares cell cultures for arbovirus isolation and propagates Vero and BHK cell cultures.
  7. Assists with development and implementation of new procedures and reviews literature for new techniques.
  8. Complies with laboratory safety guidelines and assists other staff in their duties.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • General knowledge of laboratory, clinical chemistry, quality control, and human molecular genetic principles.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, follow written and verbal instructions, and use laboratory equipment.
  • Ability to work in harmony with other team members, prioritize tasks, and maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to use aseptic techniques, complete tasks without close supervision, and use mature judgment in test interpretation.
Registration or Licensure Requirements:

Required: Bachelor's, master's, or doctoral degree in a chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution.

Additional Information:

Must be willing to work hours other than 8am-5pm, including weekends and holidays, and occasional travel to attend professional meetings.
