Position Overview

Operation Breakthrough is dedicated to assisting children from low-income backgrounds in reaching their highest potential by offering a nurturing, secure, and educational atmosphere. We also aim to empower families through various services including education, advocacy, and emergency assistance.

ROLE SUMMARY

An Early Childhood Education Specialist is responsible for guiding and overseeing children in a full-day Early Head Start or Head Start classroom, while also engaging in related educational activities.

REQUIREMENTS

The position of Head Start Teacher necessitates at least an Associate's degree in Early Childhood Education or a related field, along with thirty (30) hours of early education coursework. A Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education or a related discipline is preferred, also requiring thirty (30) hours of early education coursework.

For Early Head Start Teachers or Head Start Teacher Assistants, a minimum of a Child Development Associate (CDA) credential or a degree with nine (9) hours of early education coursework is required. Candidates must provide transcripts and/or current CDA certificates.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversee or ensure the completion of daily attendance, meal counts, lesson plans, and classroom cleanliness checklists.
  • Design and implement activities and teaching strategies tailored to the developmental needs of each child.
  • Apply the Early Head Start Curriculum within the classroom, adhering to Developmentally Appropriate Practices.
  • Collaborate with and mentor Co-Teachers in understanding educational objectives and plans for each child, utilizing screening and observational data; provide on-the-job training.
  • Work with professional staff to utilize Developmental Screening, anecdotal records, and portfolios to create lesson plans and individualized programs for each child.
  • Discuss the specific needs of individual children with teaching staff, supervisors, specialists, and parents, providing necessary documentation for referrals.
  • Prepare daily lesson plans that include individual, small group, and large group activities.
  • Organize special events and field trips, incorporating ideas and suggestions from the Assistant Teacher.
  • Foster a positive classroom environment that encourages learning.
  • Report any observed safety, physical, and licensing concerns to the Supervisor.
  • Supervise mealtimes effectively.
  • Arrange and participate in Parent/Teacher Conferences as outlined by Head Start and Early Head Start policies; inform parents about program activities, developmentally appropriate practices, and program objectives, while identifying and communicating each child's needs.
  • Encourage parental involvement by promoting participation in activities.
  • Compile an accurate inventory of classroom supplies as per center and Head Start guidelines, with assistance from teaching staff.
  • Facilitate and engage in classroom staff meetings.
  • Ensure all paperwork is completed and submitted by required deadlines, including specified reports.
  • Maintain necessary supplies for classroom activities.
  • Perform other assigned duties as needed.

  • Physical capability to bend, kneel, and squat frequently throughout the day.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 45 pounds multiple times daily.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This role involves working in an indoor classroom setting as well as outdoor recess, weather permitting.
