FLSA Status: Non-exempt

PURPOSE OF JOB: The primary objective of this role is to collaborate with classroom educators to effectively design, coordinate, and implement instructional activities. The assistant will work alongside teachers to guide children in activities aimed at fostering social, physical, and intellectual development essential for their educational journey.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The following duties are integral to this position:

  1. Perform additional tasks as assigned.
  2. Assist educators in executing students' Individual Education Plans (IEP).
  3. Possess a comprehensive understanding of Early Childhood Special Education content areas, collaborating with colleagues to ensure a cohesive team approach.
  4. Encourage and facilitate children's social, emotional, and physical growth.
  5. Foster a language-rich environment that enhances literacy through reading and writing activities in the classroom.
  6. Engage in collaborative teaching, planning, and daily routines with the instructor.
  7. Deliver small group and circle time instruction to designated children.
  8. Support and communicate the curriculum effectively to children and their families.
  9. Assist in ongoing developmental evaluations and assessments of children's progress.
  10. Help prepare and organize materials for student use.
  11. Participate in orientation and professional development sessions, taking on leadership roles when necessary.
  12. Implement individual and group activities to promote growth as outlined in the IEP.
  13. Teach children essential daily living skills as appropriate.
  14. Provide support to students outside of the Special Education classroom as assigned.
  15. Offer temporary classroom coverage when the teacher is present in the building.
  16. Provide personal care for students as needed (e.g., diaper changing, toileting, feeding).
  17. Assist in lifting and transferring students as required.
  18. Utilize technology to enhance student learning outcomes.
  19. Report any staffing and classroom concerns to the designated supervisor promptly.
  20. Maintain a positive, safe, and healthy learning environment by reporting unsafe conditions to the classroom instructor.
  21. Monitor student arrival and departure.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: None

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • 60 college credit hours with a minimum GPA of 2.5.
  • Missouri state substitute teacher certification.
  • Experience working with children and their families.
  • Genuine interest in working with children aged 3-21.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Three years of successful experience working with children and their families.
  • Coursework in early childhood education.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical requirements for this position include the ability to sit, stand, walk, speak, hear, and use hands and fingers. The role may require bending, stooping, and lifting objects weighing at least 25 pounds, and in emergencies, lifting a child weighing up to 40 pounds. The position also requires the ability to kneel, crouch, sit on the floor, or crawl as necessary. Visual abilities must include mono and color vision, close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Length of work year: 7 hours per day; 5 days/week; 205 days calendar

Benefits: Retirement Programs, Health, Dental, and Life Insurance are provided. A mandatory 9% contribution to the KCPS Defined Benefit Pension plan is required from the employee, matched by KCPS. Voluntary retirement savings plans are also available.
