Job Overview

POSITION SUMMARY

Under the guidance of the Associate Director of Recreational Aquatics, the Aquatic Program Instructor is responsible for implementing the YMCA swim lesson curriculum through both group and individual lessons. Additionally, the Safety Supervisor ensures the protection and welfare of all individuals utilizing the aquatic facilities. This role focuses on fostering strong and confident swimmers by providing opportunities that promote a sense of accomplishment while prioritizing safety in and around water.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Conducts swimming lessons in alignment with YMCA standards, preparing lesson plans tailored to meet participant needs.

2. Establishes effective communication and rapport with swimmers and their guardians.

3. Provides information regarding aquatic programs and schedules, directing participants to additional resources as necessary.

4. Ensures participant safety during classes, responding promptly and appropriately to emergencies in accordance with established policies.

5. Performs regular equipment checks, ensuring availability and proper chemical balance in the pool.

6. Enforces adherence to all guidelines and regulations outlined in the YMCA Member Handbook.

7. Maintains necessary records, including attendance, progress reports, and incident logs.

8. Participates in scheduled staff meetings and training sessions.

9. Complies with all YMCA policies, including emergency and safety protocols.

10. Prepares program spaces and secures all equipment, reporting any damages to the Associate Director.

QUALIFICATIONS

1. Minimum age requirement of 16 years.

2. Must demonstrate required skills per YMCA standards.

3. Successfully complete the Lifeguard certification pre-test and demonstrate proficiency in four core swim strokes.

4. Hold current certifications including YMCA Swim Lesson Certification, YMCA/American Red Cross Lifeguard certification, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid, and Emergency Oxygen, or be able to obtain them prior to employment.

5. Ability to engage with individuals of all ages and abilities.

6. Clear and concise communication skills with staff and participants.

7. Capable of addressing questions and concerns from staff and members in a professional manner.

8. Highly motivated and able to maintain a positive presence, even in challenging situations.

9. Ability to enforce rules and make sound decisions to ensure the safety of all participants.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

1. Must be able to instruct and observe proper swimming techniques.

2. Ability to remain in the water for extended periods and frequently enter the water as needed.

3. Capability to lift and carry supplies weighing up to 50 pounds.

4. Exposure to communicable diseases and bodily fluids.

5. Work in a humid and warm environment.

COMPENSATION & SCHEDULE:

• Compensation ranges from $16.00 to $20.00 based on certifications and experience.

• Schedule includes Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings, as well as Saturday and Sunday shifts.
