Position Overview

The Veterans Health Administration is seeking qualified candidates for multiple Intermittent Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) roles. The selected individuals will function as Emergency Medical Technicians within the Fire Section of the Public Safety Service.

Key Responsibilities

The responsibilities of the EMT may include, but are not limited to: Emergency Medical Technician (EMT):
  • Conduct thorough patient evaluations, determining the severity of medical conditions and identifying critical issues.
  • Establish and prioritize suitable medical interventions and determine the necessity for additional support.
  • Perform patient triage and accurately document vital signs as required.
  • Execute physical assessments and gather comprehensive patient histories, evaluating various bodily systems and levels of consciousness.
  • Deliver basic life support in emergency situations, adhering to established medical protocols, which may involve administering CPR and other medical treatments.
  • Utilize and manage various emergency vehicles and medical equipment, including ambulances and monitoring devices.
  • Implement treatment protocols and make necessary adjustments within designated limits.
  • In non-emergency situations, provide technical support to the Emergency Department.
  • Determine the most efficient routes for emergency transport, considering traffic and facility locations.
  • Comply with traffic laws and regulations while operating emergency vehicles and maintain accurate patient and vehicle documentation.
  • Conduct safety inspections and perform routine maintenance on emergency vehicles.
  • Assist in the safe transport of patients to and from medical facilities.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Physical Requirements: The role involves significant physical demands, including lifting and moving patients in various situations. The EMT must be prepared for prolonged periods of physical activity, often in challenging environments.

Work Environment: Employees may encounter exposure to infectious diseases and hazardous conditions, requiring adherence to safety protocols and the use of protective equipment.

Work Schedule: EMTs will work on a rotating shift basis, including weekends and holidays.

Qualifications:

To qualify for this position, candidates must meet specific requirements by the closing date of the announcement.

Selective Placement Factors:
  • Possession of a valid Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR certification.
  • A valid and unrestricted state driver's license.
Experience and Education: Candidates may qualify based on relevant experience or education, including specialized experience in emergency medical care or related fields.

Competencies: Candidates will be evaluated based on their proficiency in communications, emergency care, patient management, and related skills.
