Key Responsibilities
As a member of the senior management team, the Assistant Chief of Staff (ACOS) serves as a principal advisor to the Chief of Staff (COS) and Director on clinical matters and aids in the administration and oversight of clinical, educational, and research initiatives. The ACOS's duties encompass leading physician roles over Care in the Community, Ancillary Services (Lab and Radiology), Referral Coordination Initiatives, Academic Affiliations, and Access initiatives. Furthermore, the ACOS will support Quality Improvement initiatives by collaborating with clinical service chiefs and performance measure champions to enhance processes aimed at meeting performance measure goals and optimizing utilization management. The ACOS will also review contract requests and determine the most effective means to secure necessary resources. In the absence of the COS, the ACOS will assume the role of Acting COS, including assisting transfer coordinators and external facilities to effectively manage inpatient transfers and shared medical care. The ACOS supervises a diverse range of professional and administrative personnel, participates in various medical center committees and workgroups, engages in hands-on clinical work, and oversees all facets of patient care. The incumbent is directly accountable to the COS for clinical program activities and overall adherence to VA, VHA, and VISN-wide policies and procedures.
Clinical Responsibilities
- Delivers direct patient care in the ACOS's area of medical specialty while ensuring overall clinical oversight for the facility.
- Designs services with a patient-centered focus to enhance patient education and shared decision-making.
- Proactively identifies and promotes the implementation of best practices in customer service while dismantling barriers to effective service delivery.
- Empowers staff to independently resolve issues and complaints at the most immediate level.
- Enhances patient outcomes through ongoing measurement and process refinement.
- Ensures clinical services meet standards set by various accrediting and regulatory bodies and the VA Central Office.
- Fosters and supports research and academic affiliation/education missions.
- Collaborates closely with universities and educational institutions with academic affiliation partnerships.
- Facilitates the application of research findings to improve patient outcomes.
- Cultivates an environment where continuous learning and professional development are prioritized.
- Works collaboratively to develop initiatives that ensure service coordination, reduce redundancies, and enhance cost-effectiveness, efficiency, and overall productivity.
- Encourages innovative projects and experimental approaches that may lead to the creation of alternative revenue streams.

- Responsible for ensuring appropriate actions in matters such as promotions, selections, rewards, recognition, and training.
- Maintains positive labor-management relations with the union to address personnel issues and proactively plan for changes in the work environment.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, candidates must meet the basic requirements and any additional qualifications specified in the job announcement.
Basic Requirements:
- U.S. Citizenship.
- Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree in allopathic or osteopathic medicine.
- Current, unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. State, Territory, or Commonwealth.
- Completion of residency training in an accredited core specialty program.
- Proficiency in spoken and written English.
- Knowledge of the VA system and its regulations.
- Understanding of patient care processes and systems.
- Commitment to an interdisciplinary approach to care delivery.
- Demonstrated ability to coordinate a broad range of programs.
- Progressive management experience with strong administrative and interpersonal skills.
- Proven skills in maintaining and enhancing partnerships with academic affiliates and other key stakeholders.
Light lifting, carrying, use of fingers, walking, standing, and the ability to work closely with others are required.
