Overview:
The Clinical Optometry Specialist is responsible for delivering comprehensive eye care services in both outpatient and inpatient settings, supporting the eye clinic and Visual Impairment Services Outpatient Rehabilitation (VISOR) clinic.

Reporting Structure:
This position reports directly to the Chief of Blind Rehabilitation and Optometry Service.

Key Responsibilities:
The duties of the Clinical Optometry Specialist encompass, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Conducting independent examinations, diagnosing, treating, and managing ocular conditions, diseases, and injuries in accordance with state regulations.
  • Ordering necessary laboratory and imaging studies.
  • Prescribing ocular prosthetic devices, including spectacles, contact lenses, prisms, artificial eyes, and low vision aids.

Consultative Role:
Providing consultative reports to primary care physicians, staff, and specialists as needed.

Referral and Supervision:
Referring patients requiring care beyond the scope of optometry practice and supervising, educating, and training interns, residents, and ophthalmic trainees.

Certification:
Certifying as a reader in the Tele-eye program and as a Compensation and Pension (C&P) provider.

Administrative Support:
Providing administrative assistance to the service, which includes:

  • Eye care treatment planning.
  • Patient assessments and follow-up visits.
  • Peer reviews and grand rounds.
  • Strategic planning for optometry services.

Teaching Responsibilities:
Engaging in educational activities for colleagues, residents, optometry and medical students, nursing, and other ancillary staff.

Professional Conduct:
Demonstrating professionalism and a positive attitude towards Veterans, co-workers, and the public. Identifying and addressing Veteran concerns with sensitivity and discernment.

Documentation:
Ensuring timely and accurate documentation in accordance with facility policies, including maintaining patient confidentiality as per HIPAA regulations.

Work Schedule:
Standard working hours are Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM.
