Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Systems Engineer to join our team at the Volusia Sheriff's Office. As a key member of our IT department, you will be responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining our virtual infrastructure, computer hardware, operating system software, data storage, and database management systems.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and implement VMware Horizon VDI environments
  • Design and implement VMware vSphere and Hyper-V Server Environments
  • Prepare detailed technical analyses, recommendations, project plans, and cost projections for network projects
  • Maintain high-level technical knowledge of network hardware and software
  • Define and allocate disk storage for file and database systems on servers and storage area networks (SAN)
  • Train operational staff and automate routine operational and maintenance tasks
  • Develop, document, and enhance system administration procedures
  • Prepare detailed technical analysis, recommendations, project plans, and cost projections for server and SAN projects
  • Maintain high-level technical knowledge of server hardware, virtual environments, SANs, operating system software, and database management software
  • Design and implement high-availability hardware and software systems
  • Analyze user requirements, developers' needs, and technical constraints
  • Implement solutions across multiple operating systems
  • Integrate new technologies into the existing data center environment
  • Establish Service Level Agreements with customers
  • Communicate with customers regarding ongoing technical issues affecting performance
  • Mentor and guide other Systems Engineers
  • Assist in development of strategic plans for growth and resiliency
  • Identify key success factors and identify necessary resources
  • Verify the integrity and availability of datacenter hardware
  • Determine root cause of issues and communicate with the appropriate parties
  • Notify management of the need for escalation
  • Thoroughly document incidents, remediation activities, and resolutions
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation, including system diagrams, configuration records, and standard operating procedures
  • Perform system monitoring; verify the integrity and availability of systems
  • Tune system performance tuning and optimize resource utilization
  • Perform backup operations, ensuring successful and recoverable backups
  • Manage inventory and physical storage and security of backup media
  • Perform operating system updates, patches, and configuration changes
  • Perform hardware and software upgrades and migrations
  • Perform system installation and recovery operation on a 24x7x365 basis
  • Perform decommissioning of systems
  • Provide technical expertise and assistance to other Information Technology staff
  • Interface with vendor technical representatives
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Computer Science, Mathematics, or related field
  • Two (2) years of experience in systems or database administration
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver's license
Preferred Qualifications
  • Skilled in design, implementation, and administration of VMware vSphere ESXi environments
  • Skilled in design, implementation, and administration of VMware Horizon VDI environments
  • Skilled in design and implementation of computer server environments; including security, backup and recovery, disaster recovery, routine maintenance, and automation of batch processing
  • Skilled in the evaluation and recommendation of computer hardware and software
  • Skilled in planning, coordinating, and scheduling projects
  • Skilled in system analysis and tuning
  • Skilled in system administration of physical and/or virtual servers running Windows, Linux, or Solaris operating systems
  • Skilled in the identification and resolution of complex problems with server and SAN platforms
  • Skilled in the installation, migration, and administration of cloud-based computing systems
  • Skilled in the use of PowerShell and VBScript scripting languages
  • Skilled in the administration of Microsoft Active Directory
Working Conditions

This position requires the ability to work in a general office setting with most duties being performed while sitting at a desk, table, or workstation. Must be able to work under stressful conditions and be available to work during an emergency/disaster/epidemic, as directed.
