POSITION OVERVIEW: Sapphos Environmental, Inc. is a leader in environmental planning and resource management. We are seeking a Senior Archaeologist I to enhance our cultural resources division. This pivotal role involves overseeing the comprehensive execution of project activities.

Under the guidance of the Cultural Resources Manager, this full-time, permanent role will encompass project oversight, including timeline management; conducting Phase I, II, and III assessments and mitigation monitoring; drafting technical documentation; and evaluating project effects on archaeological assets in accordance with NEPA, CEQA, and NHP regulations. The Senior Archaeologist may take on the role of Field Director or Principal Investigator, depending on their professional background and qualifications.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Directing field operations (including survey, testing, data recovery, and monitoring), archival research, technical report preparation, state and federal archaeological permitting, data gathering, and GIS mapping.
  • Collecting and analyzing data for environmental report generation.
  • Functioning both autonomously and under the direction of senior personnel.
  • Leading or supporting project management tasks and drafting proposal scopes and budgets.
  • Offering expert technical guidance on cultural resource management to clients.
  • Building and maintaining positive client relationships.
  • Understanding the state and federal environmental regulatory landscape, including NEPA, NHP, and CEQA.
  • Organizing data efficiently and clearly.
  • Interpreting and documenting data, performing analyses, and comparing results with relevant studies and regulations to ensure compliance.
  • Collaborating effectively as part of a team and independently.
  • Exhibiting flexibility and readiness to support various projects, including occasional travel.
  • Demonstrating innovation and problem-solving skills.
  • Managing multiple tasks and communicating priorities effectively.
  • Engaging in marketing and business development initiatives to attract new clients and projects.

ESSENTIAL TECHNICAL SKILLS:

  • Proven experience in California cultural resources management with a solid understanding of federal and state cultural resources laws.
  • Operational knowledge of California's prehistory and history.
  • Experience in assessing and cataloging prehistoric and historic archaeological resources.
  • Proficiency in drafting high-quality regulatory compliance documents.
  • Demonstrated experience in California cultural resources management with a strong grasp of federal and state cultural resources regulations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Compliance with the Secretary of the Interior's Professional Qualification Standards for Archaeology.
  • Registration for Professional Archaeologists (RPA) status is mandatory.
  • Master's degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, History, or a closely related discipline.
  • A minimum of 4 years of relevant experience or equivalent education in historic and/or prehistoric archaeology and cultural resources management.
  • Willingness and ability to travel and conduct fieldwork throughout Southern California.
  • A valid driver's license is required.
