POSITION OVERVIEW: Sapphos Environmental, Inc. is a leading firm in environmental planning and resource management. We are seeking a Senior Archaeologist I to enhance our cultural resources division. This role is pivotal in ensuring the effective execution of all project phases.

Reporting to the Cultural Resources Manager, this full-time, permanent role encompasses project oversight, including timeline management; conducting Phase I, II, and III investigations, as well as mitigation monitoring; drafting technical documentation; and assessing project effects on archaeological assets in accordance with NEPA, CEQA, and NHP regulations. The Senior Archaeologist may take on the role of Field Director or Principal Investigator, contingent on qualifications and experience.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Directing field operations (surveying, testing, data recovery, and monitoring), conducting archival research, authoring technical reports, obtaining state and federal archaeological permits, and performing data collection and GIS mapping.
  • Compiling data and information for environmental report preparation.
  • Working autonomously and collaboratively with senior personnel.
  • Assisting in project management and developing proposal scopes and budgets.
  • Offering expert technical guidance on cultural resource management to clients.
  • Building and maintaining positive client relationships.
  • Understanding the state and federal environmental regulatory landscape, including NEPA, NHP, and CEQA.
  • Organizing data efficiently and clearly.
  • Interpreting and documenting data, performing analyses, and aligning findings with relevant studies and regulations to ensure compliance.
  • Demonstrating flexibility and readiness to support various projects, including occasional travel.
  • Exhibiting innovation and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Managing multiple tasks and effectively communicating priorities to management.
  • Engaging in marketing and business development initiatives to attract new clients and projects.

ESSENTIAL TECHNICAL SKILLS:

  • Proven experience in California cultural resources management with a comprehensive understanding of federal and state cultural resources regulations.
  • In-depth knowledge of California's prehistory and history.
  • Experience in assessing and cataloging prehistoric and historic archaeological sites.
  • Proficient in drafting high-quality regulatory compliance documents.
  • Familiarity with California cultural resources management and relevant statutes.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Compliance with the Secretary of the Interior's Professional Qualification Standards for Archaeology.
  • Registration as a Professional Archaeologist (RPA) is mandatory.
  • Master's degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, History, or a closely related discipline.
  • A minimum of 4 years of relevant experience or equivalent education in historic and/or prehistoric archaeology and cultural resource management.
  • Willingness and ability to travel and conduct fieldwork across Southern California.
  • A valid driver's license is required.
