POSITION OVERVIEW: Sapphos Environmental, Inc. is a prominent firm specializing in environmental planning and resource management. We are seeking a Senior Archaeologist I to enhance our cultural resources division. This role is essential for the effective execution of various project phases.

Reporting to the Cultural Resources Manager, this full-time, permanent role encompasses comprehensive project oversight, including timeline management; conducting Phase I, II, and III assessments and mitigation monitoring; drafting technical documentation; and evaluating project effects on archaeological sites in accordance with NEPA, CEQA, and NHP regulations. The Senior Archaeologist may take on responsibilities as a Field Director or Principal Investigator, depending on qualifications and experience.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Overseeing field operations (surveys, testing, data recovery, and monitoring), conducting archival research, preparing technical reports, obtaining state and federal archaeological permits, and managing data collection and GIS mapping.
  • Compiling and analyzing data for environmental report preparation.
  • Working autonomously and collaboratively with senior personnel.
  • Assisting in project management and developing proposal scopes and budgets.
  • Providing expert technical guidance on cultural resource management to clients.
  • Building and maintaining positive client relationships.
  • Understanding state and federal environmental regulations, including NEPA, the National Historic Preservation Act, and CEQA.
  • Organizing data efficiently and clearly.
  • Interpreting and documenting data, performing analyses, and ensuring compliance with relevant studies and regulations.
  • Collaborating effectively within a team and independently.
  • Demonstrating flexibility and a willingness to support multiple projects, including occasional travel.
  • Exhibiting innovative problem-solving skills.
  • Managing multiple priorities and communicating effectively with management.
  • Engaging in marketing and business development initiatives to attract new clients and projects.

ESSENTIAL TECHNICAL SKILLS:

  • Proven experience in California cultural resources management with a solid understanding of federal and state statutes.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of California and Southwest prehistory and history.
  • Expertise in assessing and documenting prehistoric and historic archaeological resources.
  • Proficient in drafting regulatory compliance documents.
  • Strong command of California cultural resources management laws and regulations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Compliance with the Secretary of the Interior's Professional Qualification Standards for Archaeology.
  • Registration as a Professional Archaeologist (RPA) is mandatory.
  • Master's degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, History, or a related discipline.
  • A minimum of 4 years of relevant experience or equivalent education in historic and/or prehistoric archaeology and cultural resource management.
  • Willingness and ability to travel for fieldwork throughout Southern California.
  • A valid driver's license is required.
