POSITION OVERVIEW: Sapphos Environmental, Inc. is a leading firm in environmental planning and resource management. We are seeking a Senior Archaeologist I to enhance our cultural resources division. This pivotal role involves comprehensive project execution and oversight.
Under the guidance of the Cultural Resources Manager, this full-time, permanent role encompasses project oversight, including timeline management; conducting Phase I, II, and III investigations; and monitoring mitigation efforts. The Senior Archaeologist will prepare detailed technical reports and assess project impacts on archaeological resources in accordance with NEPA, CEQA, and NHP regulations. Depending on qualifications and experience, the Senior Archaeologist may take on responsibilities as a Field Director or Principal Investigator.
Key Responsibilities:
- Overseeing field operations such as surveys, testing, data recovery, and monitoring, along with archival research and technical report preparation.
- Collecting and analyzing data for environmental report preparation.
- Working autonomously and collaboratively with senior personnel.
- Assisting in project management and developing proposal scopes and budgets.
- Providing expert technical guidance on cultural resource management to clients.
- Building and maintaining positive client relationships.
- Understanding state and federal environmental regulations, including NEPA, NHP, and CEQA.
- Organizing data clearly and efficiently.
- Interpreting data, conducting analyses, and ensuring compliance with relevant studies and regulations.
- Demonstrating flexibility and willingness to support various projects, including travel as needed.
- Exhibiting innovation and problem-solving skills.
- Managing multiple tasks and effectively communicating priorities to management.
- Engaging in marketing and business development to attract new clients and projects.
ESSENTIAL TECHNICAL SKILLS:
- Proven experience in California cultural resources management with a solid understanding of federal and state cultural resources laws.
- In-depth knowledge of California's prehistory and history.
- Experience in assessing and evaluating prehistoric and historic archaeological resources.
- Proficient in drafting high-quality regulatory compliance documents.
- Strong operational knowledge of California cultural resources management.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Fulfillment of the Secretary of the Interior's Professional Qualification Standards for Archaeology.
- Registration for Professional Archaeologists (RPA) status is mandatory.
- Master's degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, History, or a related discipline.
- A minimum of 4 years of relevant experience or equivalent education in historic and/or prehistoric archaeology and cultural resources management.
- Willingness and ability to travel for fieldwork throughout Southern California.
- Possession of a valid driver's license.
