Overview

Wilson Elser - Business & Legal Professionals, a leading defense litigation law firm, is seeking a highly skilled Payroll Accountant to join our team in Downtown New York City. As a key member of our payroll operation, you will play a critical role in ensuring timely, compliant, and accurate processing of payroll transactions.

About the Role

We are looking for a methodical, self-motivated, and coachable individual with strong analytical and problem-solving skills to optimize our payroll processes using UKG and ensure compliance with government regulations. The successful candidate will be responsible for payroll reconciliations, system maintenance, and handling various ad hoc analytical requests.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Participate in payroll processing to ensure timely, compliant, and accurate processing of payroll transactions, including salaries, benefits, garnishments, taxes, and other deductions
  • Prepare and maintain detailed, accurate records and reports of payroll transactions
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local payroll, wage, and hour laws as well as adherence to industry best practices
  • Assist with the facilitation of audits by fulfilling audit requests with substantiated records and documentation
  • Identify opportunities for enhancing payroll systems and procedures, recommending and implementing updates as needed
  • Perform additional tasks as required to support the payroll operation
  • Prepare payroll and compensation-related journal entries and accruals
  • Assist in the preparation of year-end tax forms ensuring accuracy and compliance

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a relevant field
  • 3+ years' related experience required, including payroll processing
  • Extensive knowledge of payroll functions, including: Payroll tax return and general ledger reconciliations, Payroll internal controls, Benefit taxation implications and reporting
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Excel (Pivot tables and V-lookups)
  • Strong proficiency in Ultipro/UKG/Kronos payroll software
