Position Summary

The Outfitting Designer III plays a pivotal role in the creation and refinement of outfitting designs and technical drawings for new marine vessels and modifications to existing models.

Key Responsibilities

The Outfitting Designer III is tasked with:

  • Overseeing the work of junior outfitting designers to ensure quality and accuracy.
  • Creating 3D models for foundational structures, equipment, joinery, staircases, ladders, handrails, and platforms, along with 2D production drawings and CAM data for both new and existing products.
  • Maintaining high standards for the quality of outfitting design models and drawings.
  • Integrating build strategies and production design into outfitting plans.
  • Developing detailed specifications to facilitate manufacturing installation and assembly processes.
  • Coordinating outfitting designs with structural, mechanical, and electrical systems.
  • Preparing Requests for Information to address gaps in functional engineering data.
  • Selecting vendor hardware and components that meet system and customer specifications.
  • Organizing and managing drawing file structures and storage solutions.
  • Processing engineering change notices and related corrective actions.
  • Conducting reviews of models and drawings with engineering, production, and production control teams.
  • Updating models and drawings based on feedback from engineering and production staff.
  • Creating illustrated parts lists for the Shipconstructor Database.
  • Assisting field engineers in resolving production-related inquiries.
  • Performing additional duties as assigned by the Production Design Manager.
Qualifications

Essential:

  • Associate of Applied Science or equivalent qualification.
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in mechanical, structural, or outfitting design.
  • 5 years of experience with ShipConstructor software, or 3 years with ShipConstructor and 2 years with similar software.
  • 10 years of proficiency in AutoCAD software.
  • Proven ability to develop 3D outfitting models and production drawings.
  • Experience with file conversion across various CAD formats.
  • Solid understanding of joinery systems, stair and ladder design, handrail construction, and platform foundations.
  • Strong technical writing and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent organizational capabilities.
  • Understanding of project scheduling and adherence to deadlines.

Desirable:

  • Experience in steel or aluminum shipbuilding, boat construction, offshore design, or marine fabrication.
  • Background in fabrication or field engineering.
  • In-depth knowledge of outfitting standards and human system integration design, including familiarity with ASTM 1166.
  • Experience with multiple CAD programs and converting STP, IGES files to AutoCAD formats.
  • Knowledge of manholes, tank covers, doors, deck fittings.
  • Familiarity with ABS, US Navy, and USCG design standards.
  • Understanding of modular construction techniques.

  • Occasional work in manufacturing settings and on vessels during production and trials.
