Position Overview:
Are you seeking an opportunity to transition into the healthcare sector with a background in customer service, retail, or a related field? The role of a Specimen Processor at UPMC laboratories could be the ideal starting point for your career.
Role Details:
UPMC Presbyterian is currently looking for a casual Specimen Processor (per diem) to assist in the Automated Testing Lab (ATL). This position requires night shift availability (11:15 p.m. to 7:15 a.m.) as needed, including rotating weekend and holiday duties.
Key Responsibilities:
- Actively participate in the completion of departmental tasks.
- Oversee pneumatic tube and courier deliveries to ensure prompt specimen processing.
- Identify and resolve any issues related to specimen requests or discrepancies. Seek assistance when necessary and complete quality documentation for unacceptable specimens or errors.
- Utilize centrifugation for specimen separation and label aliquot tubes as per established protocols; ensure samples are stored at the correct temperatures.
- Record the specimen receipt time in the laboratory information system.
- Respond to inquiries regarding proper specimen collection, results, and reference ranges.
- Adhere to health and safety regulations while handling biohazardous materials to prevent exposure.
- Verify patient specimens, ensuring accuracy between samples and accompanying documentation.
- Prepare and dispatch specimens to external locations as required.
- Receive, categorize, and prioritize all specimens according to laboratory policies.
- Communicate any issues to supervisors and manage requests that require clarification.
- Maintain cleanliness in the work area during and after shifts, and assist in training new specimen processors.
Qualifications:
- High School diploma or equivalent is required.
- Preferred experience includes three to six months in a clinical laboratory, physician's office, or medical environment, with knowledge of medical terminology and laboratory information systems.
- Experience in a service-oriented environment, such as a call center or customer service center, is also preferred.
- Strong oral and written communication skills are essential.
- Ability to effectively communicate with diverse age groups and populations, both in person and over the phone.
Licensure and Certifications:
- Act 34 clearance is required.
