Job Summary:

UPMC Shadyside is seeking a full-time Medical Laboratory Scientist or Medical Laboratory Technician to support the Automated Testing Lab. This role will work a steady evening shift schedule, with rotating weekends and holidays.

The successful candidate will be placed into the appropriate job title and salary based on their individual experience and education. The Medical Laboratory Scientist's salary starts at $25.74/hour.

UPMC offers a generous sign-on bonus of up to $15,000 for MLS and MLT new hires who qualify.

Responsibilities:

  • Interact with all laboratory customers professionally and respond to telephone inquiries in a timely manner.
  • Practice pleasant communications both internally and externally.
  • Adhere to all established laboratory and hospital policies, procedures, methods, quality assurance, proficiency testing, and personnel policies.
  • Collect and process specimens for analysis, including phlebotomy as required.
  • Perform qualitative and quantitative analytical procedures according to established protocols.
  • Recognize critical, abnormal, and unacceptable test results and follow up according to established protocols.
  • Process specimens for analysis and enter accurate patient demographic information and laboratory test orders into the laboratory information system.
  • Independently perform Moderately Complex or Waived tests and perform High Complexity testing with the oversight of a Medical Laboratory Scientist or with result review by a Supervisor or Manager.
  • Meet established testing protocols for precision and accuracy in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Perform and document Quality Control according to established protocols.
  • Operate and maintain equipment within the scope of training.
  • Monitor and maintain supplies for functions the position is responsible for.
  • Demonstrate dependability, reliability, and independent judgment.
  • Follow all biohazard, chemical, and sharps safety guidelines.
  • Honor confidentiality of patient information.
  • Assist with the training and orienting of new employees, students, and residents.

Requirements:

  • Medical Laboratory Scientist: Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university and successful completion of a CAHEA accredited Medical Technology program, or Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university with a major in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science and ASCP categorical certification, or Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university with a major in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science and at least two years' experience in a role equivalent to that of a Medical Laboratory Technician in a clinical laboratory.
  • Medical Laboratory Technician: Associate Degree in a laboratory science with certification (or eligible new graduate) from an accredited institution as either a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) or as a Clinical Laboratory Assistant (CLA), or Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited institution with a major in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science, with 6 months of clinical laboratory experience, or Equivalent education and experience as defined by CLIA '88 for individuals performing high complexity testing.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Medical Laboratory Technician MLT(ASCP) or Clinical Laboratory Assistant (CLA) certification preferred.
