Job Summary

UPMC Presbyterian is seeking a skilled Laboratory Support Technician to join our team in the Automated Testing Lab. This is a full-time position that requires evening shift hours with rotating weekends and holidays.

The Automated Testing Lab is a state-of-the-art facility that offers a positive work environment with natural light, a diverse team, and opportunities for growth and recognition.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Process and prepare testing-ready specimens for analysis.
  • Perform routine and basic instrument maintenance.
  • Assist with restocking supplies and maintaining a clean and orderly storage space.
  • Prepare and replenish instrument reagents and consumables.
  • Perform QA/QC procedures as assigned.
  • Assist with specimen/slide storage and retrieval.
  • Check pending work lists and investigate and resolve any unprocessed work.
  • Decontaminate work areas and maintain a neat and clean working environment.
  • Test and clean emergency eyewashes and showers as assigned.
  • Sort laboratory waste and ensure proper disposal.
  • Transport specimens off-site and deliver supplies as required.
  • Prepare specimens at workstations for testing.
  • Prepare microscopic slides and plant specimens in microbiologic growth media as required.
  • Manage and monitor department operations during off-shifts.

Requirements:

  • High School diploma or equivalent, and at least 2 years experience as a Specimen Processor (or equivalent) required in a clinical lab, OR
  • Associate degree (with biology and chemistry courses) and at least 1 year of experience as a Specimen Processor (or equivalent) in a clinical lab, OR
  • Phlebotomy or Medical Assistant certification and 1 year of experience as a Specimen Processor (or equivalent) in a clinical lab, OR
  • Successful completion of a 50-week U.S. military medical laboratory training course, OR
  • B.S. degree from an accredited institution with a major in biological or clinical laboratory science OR
  • Currently enrolled in an MLS (Medical Laboratory Scientist) or equivalent training program, with 3 years of college credits required.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Medical Laboratory Assistant MLA (ASCP) or equivalent certification preferred.
  • Act 34
