Job Description

POSITION OVERVIEW

The main responsibility of this role is to ensure the effective operation and preventive upkeep, repairs, installations, and modifications of the facility's ammonia refrigeration and boiler systems, along with any related equipment. Compliance with all safety regulations, codes, and industry standards is essential. This position requires performing tasks that involve a considerable variety of complexity and specialized technical duties under general supervision. The technician will rely on their experience and judgment to achieve objectives while collaborating professionally with colleagues and clients.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Oversee and manage high-pressure steam boiler and ammonia refrigeration systems.
  2. Conduct maintenance and repairs on vacuum, gear, rotor, and water pumps.
  3. Understand and apply basic refrigeration process principles.
  4. Interpret technical literature, schematics, gauges, and instruments accurately.
  5. Maintain precise log sheets and records of operations.
  6. Operate and service industrial air compressors, including disassembly for maintenance and repairs.
  7. Inspect the facility to monitor refrigeration, boiler, air, and water systems, documenting findings and addressing any irregularities.
  8. Diagnose and troubleshoot all refrigeration equipment effectively.
  9. Engage in the process safety management team activities.
  10. Utilize computer applications, including SAP, Word, Excel, and Outlook, for various tasks.
  11. Evaluate service requests for repairs and maintenance, identifying issues and proposing suitable solutions.
  12. Perform additional general facility maintenance tasks as assigned.
  13. Execute repairs and preventive maintenance on all refrigeration equipment.
  14. Make informed operational decisions based on available data.
  15. Maintain a clean work environment consistently.
  16. Demonstrate reliable attendance and adhere to safety protocols, including wearing respirators and passing pulmonary function tests.
  17. Handle various substances, including steam, biocide agents, phosphates, caustics, acids, degreasers, cleaners, paint, paint thinners, and oils.
  18. Participate in Emergency Response training in a fast-paced work setting.
  19. Exhibit basic mechanical skills using hand tools.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

A minimum of a 4-year vocational training or a 2-year technical degree is preferred, along with at least 2 years of experience as a maintenance technician in the food industry. A strong background in refrigeration, particularly ammonia refrigeration, is advantageous.

TRAINING, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE

Candidates should possess 5+ years of specialization in industrial maintenance or 3+ years of experience with a journey-level license. An ammonia refrigeration technical certificate and/or equivalent experience is required. The technician must have their own tools and experience using hand and power tools for preventive maintenance in a dynamic work environment. The ability to read and interpret system drawings, manuals, and P&ID drawings, along with understanding and complying with Process Safety Management guidelines, is essential. Additionally, candidates should be self-motivated, possess excellent time management skills, and have a high attention to detail, along with strong verbal and written communication skills, all while committing to a safe work environment.
